What Reading Skills Are?• Reading is the process of constructing meaning

from written texts. It is a complex skill requiring the coordination of a number of interrelated sources of information (Anderson et al., 1985).

• Reading skills refer to the specific abilities that enable a person to read with independence and interact with the message.

Importance Of Reading Skills

Reading skills are the key to:•The general knowledge, spelling, writing

abilities and vocabulary.• The passion of learning and advancing.•The success in most academic and

occupational fields.•Improve grammar and Spellings.•A healthy self-concept.

Five Pillars Of Reading Instructions

• Phonemic Awareness -Ability to hear, identify and manipulate the individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words.

• Phonics- a method of teaching people to read and pronounce words by learning the sounds of letters, letter groups, and syllables.

with accuracy, and with an appropriate rate, expression, and phrasing.

Prosody-Important tool of Fluent Reading•Prosody is reading with expression, with

appropriate phrasing, with pitch, stress and emphasis.

•Disfluent readers tend to read in a monotonous and choppy fashion with little or no expression and their phrasing is either word by word or involves awkward grouping of words.

• Fluent readers, on the other hand, integrate pitch, emphasis, and the appropriate use of phrasing in their reading. This occurs only as readers become aware of the connection between written and oral language. This indicates their understanding of what they have read.

•Brainstorm, cluster, web, list the things.

•Anticipate-Predict the up coming text.
