Rational Numbers

• A rational number is a number that can be expressed as a fraction or ratio (rational).

• When the fraction is divided out, it becomes a terminating or repeating decimal.

Rational: -6,-1/2, 0, 2/3…

Irrational NumbersAn irrational number is not expressed as a

fraction. As decimals, irrational numbers do not repeat in a pattern or terminate.

• Students will determine whether their number is rational or irrational. Students will stand up and go to the side of the class (predetermined by teacher) that is labeled rational or irrational.
