What is a Resume?

It’s a brief history of your accomplishments and experience that you prepare for future potential employers.

A good resume is…

• Clear- It presents the facts in a clear, easy-to-read style.

• Well organized- The reader can see your strong points at a glance.

• Dynamic- Action verbs make the past come alive.

• Neat- It’s appearance says “I’m proud of who I am and what I’ve done.”

Keep in mind that your resume should be designed with one thing..

Resume Outline

• Heading

• Objective

• Education

• Skills

• Work Experience

• Awards

• Training or Certifications

Heading

This must include

• Full name

• Address

• Home or Cell phone numbers

• Personal email address

Your email needs to be professional!!

Objective

This helps the employer know what type of position you’re looking for.

In your objective• Try and stay away from using “I”• Include your field or study that you

are interested in.• Be creative!

Education

Be sure that your education states

• The full name of the college or institute

• Dates of attendance (include whether you graduated)

• Your major or vocation

• Include course descriptions

Do not include your HIGH SCHOOL!

Work Experience

This can include any full time or part time, seasonal or volunteer work. Provide:

• Names and locations of Employers• Dates of employment• Job titles• Job duties and any major accomplishments

Stay away from including very old employment unless it pertains to the job at hand.

Skills

You want to mention:• Special abilities such as

specific computer skills or a foreign language

• Interests & activities that demonstrate job-related skills

• Personal accomplishments

Awards

This can be from school or work or other..

• School awards like perfect attendance or outstanding student

• Work awards such as employee of the month

• Volunteer awards or any special recommendations

Training or Certifications

This is a great way to include information that maybe not everyone will have. Such as…

• Special skills training

• Certifications

Setting the right tone

• Emphasize the positive

• Highlight accomplishments

• Use action verbs

• Avoid wordiness

• Use familiar terms

• Spell check

• Be neat!

Finishing Touches

• Attractive Layout- Leave a “1” margin on all sides and use bullets or boldface to emphasize important information.

• Type your resume

• Proofread carefully- Have someone else read and double check.

A good resume gets results

• Gather- all information needed.

• Use- the right form and tone.

• Keep- it neat.

• Prepare- an effective cover letter.

• Get help- if you need it.

References

A reference page should include:• Full name of reference• Job title• Address and Phone numbers• Their relationship to you

Remember who you choose needs to be someone who is going to represent you well and have a

professional voice and ring tone!

Cover Letter

Cover letter should include:• Name, Title and Address• 3 Brief paragraphs: Why you’re writing, How

your skills can be a benefit & A request to reply and or an interview.

• Complimentary closing

It should display why you are writing & that you are the BEST candidate for the job!

Thank You Notes

Thank you letters are you used to reemphasize your potential value to the company and to

thank you for their time!

Needs to say:• A couple of lines saying thank you for their time• And I hope to here back from you soon!
