• Polytheism – poly means “many” and theism means “gods”

• Egyptians believed gods controlled every aspect of life

• To keep gods happy they built temples for the gods

• Many gods were associated with animals• Amon-Re was the most important god – The

Sun god• Osiris – the god of the underworld• Isis – the mother god of Egypt• Horus- the son of Osiris and Isis

• Egyptian homes were made of bricks and designed to keep people cool

• They ate grains, fruits, vegetables, and fish. Meat was only eaten on special occasions

• They enjoyed music with meals• They loved beauty and fashion – both men

and women wore make-up and wigs to look more attractive

• Egyptians believed they could overcome death• Life on earth led to an afterlife where they

would enjoy everything they loved in life• Those who lived good lives would live forever

but those who were sinful would be destroyed

• To prepare for afterlife, Egyptians preserved bodies after death

• Poor people were buried in the desert – the hot sand dried bodies out quickly

• Wealthy people were mummified
