ABOUT THE COURSE This course is intended to provide participants a clear background of the science and technology behind seismic reservoir characterization and also provide an exposure on modern trend as practiced by the Oil and Gas industry. Upon completion of the course, participants will understand how to analyze seismic inversion results, viz. elastic properties such as P-Impedance and VP/VS and quantitatively interpret these properties for:
more accurate structural and stratigraphic maps and volumetric estimation,
conversion of elastic properties into petrophysical/engineering reservoir properties,
planning effective drilling program based on clearer interpretation of the reservoir and
advanced reservoir description and characterization for clastic, carbonates and unconventional reservoirs

Introduction to Quantitative Reservoir Seismic Characterization (QRSC)
What is quantitative seismic reservoir characterization, role of seismic inversion and quantitative interpretation in field life of a reservoir, integration of well, seismic and other data for QSRC Rock Physics - the bridge between well and seismic data
Petro-Elastic Models (PEM) - empirical and theoretical rock physics models, Rock Physics Templates

Common applications of Rock Physics: Fluid replacement modeling, shear wave prediction
Foundation of QSRC
Seismic velocities, amplitudes and amplitude variation with offset (AVO) and their relationship with subsurface properties and conditions

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Dr Ranjit Shaw received his M.Sc.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees in Applied Geophysics from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad in the years 1987 and 1990 respectively. He served as a faculty member in the Department of Applied Geophysics of the same university for nearly 16 years. His major research interest involved Development of Interpretation Techniques and Inverse Theory. During 2002-2003, he carried out post-doctoral research at Institute for Geophysics, University of Texas at Austin in Theory of Seismic Wave Propagation in Anisotropic Media.

He is one of the pioneer researchers advocating the use of Swarm Intelligence to optimize problems of exploration geophysics. He moved back to the industry in 2007 to join Fugro-Jason and played an active role in promoting Fugro-Jason’s Seismic Reservoir Characterization technology in India. He has also led the Seismic Reservoir Characterization team of Data and Consultancy Services of Schlumberger based in Mumbai. Presently, Ranjit holds the position of Regional Technical Manager for the Far East region in GeoSoftware division of CGG. He is associate member of SEG and life member of SPG, AEG and IGU.
