Basic InformationPythagoras was born around 570 B.C.E.He was born in Samos. Hence the name Pythagoras of Samos.Way later on in his life he married one of his students, Theano.They had one son, Telauges, and three daughters, Damo, Arignote, and Myia.Pythagoras’ death is not certain, but is believed to have happened around 500 B.C.E.

Math Field

Pythagoras mainly worked in the field of Geometry.He also did a lot in music by listening to blacksmiths strike anvils.In astronomy Pythagoras taught that the Earth was the center of the universe and was the first to notice that Venus was the same star in the morning and evening.Pythagoras discovered that the numbers 7 and 4 have a lot to do with medicine.

Major Contribution

a²+b²=c²This is known as the Pythagorean Theorem.This is referring to a right triangle.A and B are referring to the two shorter sides.C is referring to the longest side.Also known as the hypotenuse.Pythagoras did not come up with this theorem, he only proved it to be true.

Other Occupation: Philosopher

As a philosopher he had a philosophy.He believed everything could be explained by numbers and music.For example: I am hungry because I’ve only eaten 500 calories and I need 1200 per day.

Education

He was well educated.Pythagoras learned to read.He learned to play the lyre.He studied with Chaldean.Pythagoras was influenced by the Pherekydes, his teacher.He listened to lectures from Anaximander who strongly influenced his own views.

Interesting Facts

Pythagoras created a school that in some ways was a brotherhood.It was secretive and based on his religious teachings.Pythagoras believed in the transmigration of souls.For that reason him and his followers, the Pythagoreans, didn’t eat meat or beans. This is also referred to as the Pythagorean Diet.
