Where’s this bridge?

Get the point?

Been there, done that – got the photograph

Is it a circle?

Is this a circle?

It all depends where you stand

A cone-slicing machine

How to draw an ellipse?

Just need a little light to see by

Cabri II Plus knows it’s a hyperbola

Cabri 3D draws a 5 point conic

Ellipse as a locus

5-point ellipse with focus F, near point P and far point Q.

Worth it? Planets or electrons?

Geometry 11-19

• The RS/JMC report

• The curriculum - no conics anywhere!

• Circles at KS3, KS4, AS, A2

• Locus at KS3/4 in Ma3

• OK to do parabola, ellipse, hyperbola

• But not statutory

• Even though they’re all around

From the RS/JMC report

• Recommendation 8: We recommend that the geometry curriculum be developed to give greater emphasis to work in 3-dimensions and to make better use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

So perspective could be another linking theme, and bring in Art, too.

• Resources: ICT, models, books, videos..

• Technical know-how:– Subjects – school/LEA– Cabri 3D – Adrian + developers– ICT tools – school/LEA/Adrian
