What issues do you face in your efforts

to publish your research work in ISI

Impact Factor journals?

Question

Publishing

• Publishing research results is an integral part of a researcher’s professional life.

• Without Publication, Science is

Dead.Gerald PielCo-founder of the modern incarnation of Scientific American magazine

8

Kami Memimpin We Lead

Publishing

• Dissemination of research result is just as important as the research activity itself.

• This will ensure the use of research results is maximized.

Publications

The number and quality of the publications is an important, possibly the most important factor deciding the career of a scientist, practically a matter of life and death.

How to measure Impact?

Kami Memimpin We Lead

Academic Research Impact

• Total number of papers• Total number of citations• Average number of citations per paper• Average number of papers per author• Average number of citations per year• h-index• g-Index• Number of authors per paper

h-index

Developed in 2005 by Jorge Hirsch, a condensed-matter physicist (University of California in San Diego) and peace activist.

23

Kami Memimpin We Lead

Definition of h-Index

A scientist has index h if h of his papers have at least hcitations each and the other papers have no more than hcitations each.

“The h-index is the highest number of papers a scientist has that have at least that number of citations.”

Nature (2005)

Eg.: Prof. Ahmad has index 15 if 15 of his papers have at least 15 citations each and the other papers have nomore than 15 citations each.

Writing the Paper

57

Kami Memimpin We Lead

Habit of Writing• Talking about writing isn’t writing. Thinking

about writing isn’t writing. Dreaming or fantasizing isn’t writing. Neither are outlining, researching, or making notes. All these may be a part of the whole milieu of the writing life and necessary to getting a project completed, but only writing is writing.

• “You can’t sit around thinking,” said fiction writer David Long. “You must sit around writing.”

Targeting the Journal

67

Kami Memimpin We Lead 68

1. What is the journal`s general scope? Conceptual, methodological, theory-driven, data-driven,...

2. What is the journal‘s current scope (editorial policies) in terms of topics, data, and methods?

3. Does my paper tie in with previous papers from that journal?

4. Can I cite prior research from that journal?

5. Who is on the journal‘s editorial board (AEs and reviewers)?

6. When is a good time to submit?

Targeting: Questions

Kami Memimpin We Lead

Do your homework• Pick journals like you pick stocks

• Should have a pool of journals

• Submit paper to a journal with a rising impact factor and higher acceptance rates. avoid declining journals with low acceptance and diminishing impact factor.

• Could cause the journal to be removed from the SSCI and SCI ranking.

• Betting your research where you have the highest probability for publication

• Target your submission, not all to top journals

94

Revisions• Don’t be discouraged. A paper

often requires 3-4 revisions before it is finally accepted. Especially in SSCI, SCI and other quality journals, you will probably be rejected the first time around.

• Pay attention to all the feedback you get and modify accordingly, and revise, resubmit, revise, resubmit, revise, resubmit.
