Letter From The editor
recently started recycling instead of throwing everything away. While having a recycling bin in my kitchen isn’t ideal, it’s a daily reminder that I’m taking a step to make the world a better place. After just one week of recycling, I noticed just how many paper products, glass
containers, plastic containers and aluminum products I had been throwing away. The bin was about to overflow. I didn’t believe I used that many items that could be recycled. I emptied the bin and within a week, it was full again.
If that’s a normal week, what would my recycling bin look like during the holidays? I started thinking about how much we waste this time of year. Think of the big TV boxes, wrapping paper galore, T-shirt boxes and plastic toy packaging—among other items—that we throw out during this joyous season. Not to mention all of the Christmas cards that get chucked—after taking in the sentiment—or the leftover food
that gets thrown away because grandma made more than our stomachs could handle.
I don’t want to be a downer. I just want people to become aware of how much goes to waste during this wonderful time of year and realize there’s something we can do about it. I know, I know … I sound like a crazy recycling environmentalist. But I was shocked to find out that
between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, household waste increases by more than 25 percent, according to recycleworks.org.
That’s not the only thing that surprised me. Did you know that roughly 2.6 billion holiday cards are sold each year? If each person sent one fewer card, we would save 50,000 cubic yards of paper. Now I feel a little better about procrastinating and not getting my cards in the mail.
This year, when you’re decking the halls, wrapping presents and cooking the holiday feast, think about cutting back a little. Maybe those presents could be wrapped in the same box to save paper. Or maybe you need to make only four pies instead of five. I don’t know about
you, but I wouldn’t want to add on to the 28 billion pounds of edible food that are wasted each year.
After dropping off your recycling, make sure to relax with this issue. It’s jam-packed with things to do this winter. Keep reading for places to ski and snowboard, toasty beverages to warm up with, 10 holiday shows and concerts to check out, clever Christmas movies to watch
and more.
