Stonehaven is a classic fishing village located on the East Coast of Scotland. The site is surrounded on 3 sides by 3 storey buildings, mainly of granite, and plaster. The only side that is exposed is to the east. Making the site stronglyexposed to the elements, and the public, while also providing an excellent view over the Atlantic Ocean. To the west of the site is the town’s High Street. The location of the site only allows for pedestrian access, from the north and

south via the south via the coastal paths.

THE MEETING SPACE // Influences

Personal Project

There were only 2 strong influences for mydesign, the Costal Museum, Norveg andsails of a ship. Stonehaven very much a costal village, so i tried my best, rather than linkingwith surrounding buildings, linking with thesea.

This lead to an almost copy of the 3 sail featureof most ships. by arrangement and slight manipulation a definte linking structure wasdesigned.

In the “101 Things I Learned in Architecture School”(Mathew Frederick) It states “Design with models!” and

in this project, thats exactly what i did. At first, small and simple, no bigger than 5cm. Then

later I designed much larger models.

Here is the smallest of the models, using smallLEDLED ‘s in my desk to create the affect of ground

lighting.

Even though the south elevation of my structurebarely changed throught the design process

the form did. With it being the side that had the most views, it seemed an obvious choice to get rid of thesolid panel, and replace it with slats, these would focus those inside on the view straight ahead.

On the designing the internal layout, I used squared paper to aid me. Upon designing my exteriorI had tried to keep the external walls asclose to the site boundary to all for maximum flexibilityto design the interior. This first rough copy shows the circulation in green, with the main meeting rooms in red, on the second floor. In this design, a feature that stuck, was the void at the front, letting

light get into the main meeting lobby, aswell as the meeting room.

Here we have the final layout. Most of the services have been placed onto the right side. The previous design idea lacked storage, so on the 1st floor storage has been added, for the main meeting room and minor. Locations of windows have also changed. Now all

windows face the south, where most of the views are creating a focal point.
