Braden R. Allenby will discuss the classic episode “Arena” and its im-plications for our culture’s imagination about science, exploration, and encoun-ters with the Other. Alan Dean Foster is a celebrated science fiction writer and contributor to the Star Trek, Star Wars, Chronicles of Riddick and Alien franchises. Mr. Foster is the story writer for Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), and recently wrote the novel versions of the new Star Trek reboot and Terminator: Salvation.

Braden R. Allenby is Lincoln Professor of Engineering and Ethics; President’s Professor of Civil, Environmental, and Sustainable Engineering, and of Law; Founding Chair of the Consortium for Emerging Technologies, Military Opera-tions, and National Security; and Found-ing Director of the Center for Earth Sys-tems Engineering and Management, at ASU. Dr. Allenby received his BA from Yale University, his JD and MA (eco-nomics) from the University of Virginia, and his MS and Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences from Rutgers University.
