2 MAIN OBJECTIVES
The NGI conferences serve as a main dissemination platform for the Euro-NF Network of
Excellence. The conference has become a key event contributing to reach the EU targets of
integrating the European research effort in the Next Generation Internet domain and to
strengthen the collaboration with non-European researchers and institutions. Following the
past successful conferences (Rome, Valencia, Trondheim, Krakow, Aveiro and Paris), NGI
2011 also focused on the design and architecture of Next Generation Internet networks as well
as wireless and socio economic aspects.
NGI 2011 was an open conference, meaning that any interested person from the area was
welcome to participate. To stimulate discussions, NGI 2011 invited scientists and
practitioners from both industry and academia, and especially welcomed contributions from
outside Euro-NF.
3 SCIENTIFIC CONTENT AND PROGRAMME
The conference was consisted of 8 sessions and 3 keynotes.
There were 5 sessions covering specific topics, each with three talks:
Wireless;
Network Architecture1;
Network Architecture2;
Traffic Engineering;
Socio-Economic Aspects.
Two sessions were presenting research performed and achievements of six Euro-NF Specific
Joint Research Projects. Furthermore, one demo session took place.
In addition, there were 3 keynotes:
Torsten Braun: Adaptive and Energy-Efficient Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks;
Anja Feldmann: Towards a Future Internet Architecture;
Peter Steenkiste: XIA: An Architecture for a Trustworthy and Evolvable Internet.

The Technical Program Committee (TPC) of NGI 2011 involved several researchers outside
of Euro-NF and even outside of Europe. This reflects the intention of the NGI to be an
international conference. In total the TPC of NGI 2011 had 73 members, which are listed in
the following table. Please note that no “Partner Number” or “Partner Acronym” is listed
because being a TPC member is independent of Euro-NF participation. In fact the majority of

8 COMPREHENSIVE SUMMARY FOCUSING ON
THE MAJOR OUTCOMES
Each day of the conference started with a keynote speech. The keynote speeches mainly
focused on future internet architecture; nevertheless energy efficiency has also been a part of
a speech. Talks were held by diverse speakers from both Europe and the United States. The
quality of the keynote speeches was highly acknowledged by the conference participants.
Session: Wireless
In session wireless, which has been chaired by prof. Paul Müller, three different presentations
on the wireless have been presented. Held talks covered reliable protocol in Wireless
multimedia sensor networks while dealing with limited energy and resources, adaptation of
bandwidth to ensure maximum operator gain and optimized system performance and data
fragmentation to optimize the efficiency of the data delivery.
Session: NA1 Network Architecture
In session Network Architectures, which has been chaired by Paulo Pereira, three different
presentations on the topic have been presented. Held talks were focused on selection of
mechanisms in flexible network architecture, congestion control with changing paths in
mobility environment, and interaction of mechanisms in a future network architecture.

Session: TE Traffic Engineering
This is was the first session on 28th
June 2011 after keynote. In this session, which has been
chaired by prof. George Polyzos, talks were focused on storage management algorithms in
content centric networks, detection of Denial-of-Service attacks by analysing traffic on edge
router, and validation of model for packet re-ordering in multipath environment.
Session: SJRP1 Special Joint Research Projects
In this session (2nd
session on 28th
June 2011), which has been chaired by Markus Fiedler,
presentations covered context-aware vehicular networks, experiment of federated test-beds for
validating a buffer model in multipath transmission and a novel architecture on Vehicular
Delay-Tolerant Networks.
Session: SJRP2 Special Joint Research Projects
This was 3rd
and last session on 28th
June 2011 which has been chaired by Prof. Kurt
Tutschku. Here, talks focused on security of spectrum sharing with the help of sensing
technologies and policies, algorithm for energy friendly algorithm for future mobile Internet
and, a framework for mapping of virtual resources to physical resources.
Session: NA2 Network Architecture
This was the 1st session on 29
th June 2011 which has been chaired by Prof. Phuoc Tran-Gia.
Talks were focused on improvements in chordNet, investigation of different impacts (i.e.
provisioning, delivery problems) on QoE, and tool for router-level Internet mapping.
Demo: Demo Presentations
This was the 2nd
session on 29th
June 2011 which has been chaired by Prof. Paul Mueller, held
talks were about presented demos in the conference, experimental facility has been main point
in all of them such that high accurate network monitoring in ETOMIC test bed, tool for
enabling and emulating networks on top of experimental facilities and tool for setting up the
topology on test bed.
Session: SEA Socio-Economic Aspects
This was the 3rd
and last session on 29th
June 2011 which has been chaired by Prof. Kurt
Tutschku. Talks were about socio economic aspects of wireless, overlay and cloud
computing.

9 OVERALL QUALITATIVE ASSESSMENT
The following assessment is based on the evaluation of the questionnaire. Within the
questionnaire a rating with five levels was used (5 = Excellent, 4 = Good, 3 = Fair, 2 = Bad,
1=Very Bad). For details of the questionnaires, see the evaluation report of the events
supported during the period (deliverable D.MA.2.1.4).
The majority of the participants of NGI 2011 gave a positive feedback:
“How do you rate the conference overall?” was rated with 4.08 in average
“Have the topics been of interest for you?” was rated with 3.85 in average
“Are the topics relevant for a "Next Generation Internet?” was rated with 4.19
The questionnaires provided also information which may be of value for the organizers of
future NGI events. The most interesting sessions have been the two sessions on “Network
Architecture” and the session on “Traffic Engineering”, each were most liked by 10 or 8
participants. The new format of the dedicated SJRP sessions seems to be a good idea. For 9
participants, these sessions have been the most interesting sessions. Also the keynotes were of
high value for the participants, with a huge majority of the answers suggesting one of the
keynotes as the best presentation at NGI 2012.
Special suggestions for the organization of future NGI events:
Try to improve the number of participants. This might be achieved by early CfP
publishing and by drawing more attention within the Euro-NF community.
Continue with having SJRP sessions.
Take into account which topics have been of most interest and which topics were
mentioned in the questionnaire feedback (see evaluation report).
Some hints of general nature for organizers of future NGI events. These hints are especially
for those who have not yet organized a conference of the same level than NGI:
Define time and venue of the conference early. Try to avoid timely overlapping with
some well-known conferences.
Addressing specific research communities will foster the quality of submissions in
contrast to addressing “everyone” in the field of networking. To achieve this, limit the
number of topics of the conference where possible and define major topics within the
CfP, if some fields are not obviously related.
Authors and Reviewers should select one (or few) of the conference major topics for
their papers or their field of expertise respectively. This helps in selecting reviewers for
papers and organizing the conference sessions.
Be prepared for attendees with special requirements (see also:
http://www.ieee.org/conferences_events/conferences/organizers/organizers_attendees.html).
In case the organisers are not familiar with applying for IEEE Technical Co-
Sponsorship (TCS), ask the Steering Board and previous organisers for support:
- IEEE TCS requires, support of an IEEE Technical Committee;
- Applying for IEEE TCS may take a few months;
- Do not use IEEE Logo before receiving a conference ID;
- Publication via IEEE Xplore is required, make sure authors are able to test camera
ready papers for IEEE format conventions (e.g. use of PDF eXpress);
- Check IEEE copyright requirements and inform authors about it.
Obviously use appropriate conference organization software (e.g. EDAS or the
conftool) to support administrative work.
Check legal and tax issues for receiving payments of participants.

Overview
Following the past successful conferences, NGI 2011 focuses on the design, engineering, and operation of Next Generation Internet networks. It is organized by the Network of Excellence (NoE) Euro-NF, which was initiated by the European Commission during the 7th Framework Program. Euro-NF serves as its main platform for interaction, dissemination, and collaboration. To stimulate discussions, NGI 2011 invites scientists and practitioners from industry and academia, and especially welcomes contributions from outside Euro-NF.
