IT Assisted Project Based Learning

What is “IT Assisted” Project-Based Learning (PBL)?

• Extended process of inquiry to create learning or teaching products.

• Rigorous projects help students learn key academic content and

• Practice 21st Century Skills (such as collaboration, communication & critical thinking amongst others).

• e-Portfolio• Authentic, Challenging • Multidisciplinary environment• Sustained efforts over period• Gain more IT Skills• Minimal External Guidance• Self-reliance and;• Personal Accountability

How might we measure PBL?

Four Suggested documentation:1. Journaling of the process 2. A Learning contract (1 Page)3. Project proposal (1 Page)4. Final Report (3-5 page)

• Research bibliography• Content outline• Audience description• Specific Learning Outcomes• Setting descriptions• Flowchart (Possible)• Explanation of Treatment• Media selection rationale • Budget report (hrs/expenses)

How we might structure it?

•EXPECTED: A technology based project/product or technology product•Centres around student’s specific subject matter •Focussed on helping other teachers teach or students use it for learning (TP)•Accompanied with documentation and a rubric for assessment•EVENTUALLY: Feed into the Tech/Na! e-content component to establish a “Best Practice in technology learning materials or project”

• Community focused learning materials or programmes• Series of instructional videos on a topic• Develop instructional – lesson appropriate computer

based games or board • Glogster™ poster with appropriated lesson plans• Podcasts or audio lessons for mobile/cellphone and

mp3 devices to support revision for students/learners• Create interactive web-based lessons• Multimedia Presentations or CBT using PowerPoint on

specific projects• Develop materials based on problem-based

approaches in the classroom• Develop a set of technology integrated lesson on a

topic• Populate a LMS such as Edmodo (www.edmodo.com) or

What should YOU do?1. ALL faculty should be involved2. You should facilitate the groups of students3. Explain “what PBL is” to your students4. Be the groups support and content guide5. Assist groups in setting realistic dates (TIMELINE) for the

learning contract & project proposal (Within first month of 2nd semester)

6. E-mail project proposals to PBL coordinator7. Depending on the kind of project go through the specific RUBRIC8. Indicate to the PBL coordinator IT equipment and software

needed (Within first month of 2nd semester)9. Final projects are uploaded to UNAM wiki site at http://
