PROGRESSIVISM

Prepared By:Rachelle Ann Rose C. Corpuz

John Dewey

• American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer

• Founder of philosophical school of “Pragmatism”

• “Educational Progressivism”

“The purpose of education is to enhance individual

effectiveness in society and give learners practical

knowledge and problem-solving skills”

Jerome Bruner

• Bruner argued that any subject can be taught in some intellectually honest form to any child at any stage of development. • He felt that interest in the material being

learned was the best stimulus for learning rather than external motivation such as grades. • Bruner developed the concept of

discovery learning which promoted learning as a process of constructing new ideas based on current or past knowledge.

What is Progressivism?

• Progressivism is the educational philosophy which is grounded in the “pure” philosophy of pragmatism. • Progressivism focuses on real-world problem solving and individual development.• Learning is an active, democratic and social process. Knowledge is constructed by the student as they experiment and solve problems.

Educational Progressivism

A.The main principle is that

humans are social animals who learn best in real-time activities with

other people

B. Strong emphasis on problem-based

learning to develop solving and analysis skills

(For example, an instructor posing questions that exercise students’ minds in a practical manner)

Educational Progressivism

C. Instructors should focus

on providing students with the necessary skills and knowledge to survive and to succeed in our competitive society

Educational Progressivism

• By understanding this philosophy of education, as a teacher, we have to know which approach can suit well to our learners’ needs.

• Education cannot be effective unless it helps a child to open up himself to life (Maria Montessori)
