“The stage is a magic circle where only the most real things happen, a neutral
territory outside the jurisdiction of Fate where stars may be crossed with impunity. A
truer and more real place does not exist in all the universe.” - P.S. Baber

Message from the HoD: Drama Department Prof Marié-Heleen Coetzee It is July again and time for Pretoria’s annual winter-warmer festival! The 2014 festival programme includes a range of exciting productions ranging from music theatre, physical theatre, comedy and drama to short films. The festival extends a warm welcome to the Argentine playwright and dramaturg, Lucìa Laragione, who will share the world of Argentine theatre with audiences. Her visit was made possible by the Embassy of Argentina in South Africa. The festival also welcomes the innovative NGO One Shot Films to Tuks drama department. One Shot will present a workshop that will allow participants to create a short one shot film with mobile phone technology.
The Grapevine festival newspaper, managed by journalism students under the supervision of lecturer Marenet Jordaan, promises to keep audiences informed about productions and events during the festival. A new (old) friend, Oom Gert se Kuierplek, will join forces with Krêkvars this year to ensure that audiences can fully enjoy the pleasures that the Bok offers. The Krêkvars Student Arts Festival is mainly an opportunity for student-artists showcase their talent with a view to promote integration with real-time, real-life entrepreneurial activities and an opportunity to absorb the change-over to an economically active professional environment with greater ease. The festival is created, organised and managed by students and ties in with various aspects of the drama programme. The current festival organiser, Missy Maguire, is a MA student in performing arts management. The festival also offers a space for young professionals to present their work. The festival encourages the creation of original work in any language and genre. It offers a space for young artists to let their imaginations run free, interrogate issues relevant to their lives and create modes of performance that support their creative signatures. Krêkvars aims to grow artists-scholars who can generate innovative creative products, can create discourse around their work, can engage with existing performing arts structures and can entertain audiences old and young. In order to encourage excellence amongst young artists, kykNET and the US Woordfees offered exciting prizes at the 2013 festival. It is my pleasure to announce that kykNET and the US Woordfees will again offer prizes. In addition, the Clover/Aardklop arts festival and Anina from E-Nuus have also made prizes available. On behalf of the drama department, I wish to thank these organisations for their contributions to the festival and for their willingness to invest in the development of young artists. Keep track of the drama department website and the Grapevine for information about the new prizes. If you want to be entertained, disturbed and enthralled, Krêkvars is the festival for you!
Melusine van Arkadia won the US Woordfees prize in 2013. The prize included a sponsored place on the 2014 US Woordfees programme. Tuks drama alumna, Stephanie Gericke, won
the coveted prize for 'best newcomer' at the US Woordfees for her acting in the title role.
Mdu Nhlapo and Francois Joubert shared the kykNET cash prize for 'best artist'.

Message from the Festival Organiser Ms Maguire
As the Krêvars Student Arts Festival enters its teenage years, it is undergoing some
adolescent changes itself… The shows are getting longer. The traditions are growing
deeper. New and exciting projects are sprouting in spaces and places. Yes indeed:
pubertal internal shifts of 2014 are turning the Krêkvars Student Arts Festival into an
upstanding festival in its own right.
I wish the best to every creator, writer, director, choreographer and performer who has
committed their time and creativity to create new works for the festival this year. The ideas and concepts look absolutely
incredible on paper, and I cannot being to image the sheer magic that will produced in the actual production.
I wish to thank the student assistants, UP Arts and the Drama Department for the various forms of support throughout
organising my second festival. What we have accomplished is something to be very proud of.
As the slogan suggests, the nights may be cold, but the entertainment for Krêkvars 2014 is indeed HOT!
Message from the Grapevine Ms Marenet Jordaan
There is a saying that "all journalism is
storytelling".
With the Grapevine it is no different. Whether it is for a review, an artist interview or a behind-the-scenes glimpse into
the Krêkvars scene, the UP Journalism students will use the facts they gather to tell interesting stories.
Like artists we love to perform for an audience. So we hope you like what we produce.
Remember: You heard it here first.

Benjamin Walt. 19, confused and living in possibly the smallest town in history. Grietskakdorp. Yes, GRIETS-KAK-DORP. Ben grew up in this town knowing only two things: one, his father was killed by something yellow and two, if he didn't attend church every Sunday he would eternally burn in hell. Benjamin Walt is a delightful musical that deals with family, sexuality and how Ben met the choir of Greenhaven (who apparently saved him).

Waar begin ‘n mens? By die begin natuurlik.
