Producers

This bush is an organism that gets nutrients from the sun in order to survive.

Trees, grass, wheat and flowers are other examples of producers.

Consumers

This cricket is a consumer because it eats food. Crickets like to eat leaves, fungi and fruit but they are also known to eat insects or bugs. They can also be called omnivorous because they eat plants and animals or known as prey for snakes and fish.

Crickets are also considered “good luck”.

Decomposers

Shell fungi is a decomposer of dead trees. They recycle dead trees into chemical nutrients like nitrogen and carbon. Then they release those chemicals back into the soil, air and water.

Omnivores

Parakeets are omnivores eating mainly insects, seeds leaves, plants, grass, fruit and ferns.

Humans, chickens, pigs, squirrels and fish are more examples of omnivores.

Herbivores

The tortoise eats only plants. Their diet consist of 100% plant food.

Rabbits are herbivores too!

Carnivores

Cats are carnivores because they feed on other animals. They get their nutrients from meat including water. A cat’s prey is 70-75% water

Predators

Pink Toe Tarantula

Also known as a spider. Spiders help control the insect population by eating insects. Common prey of the tarantula are crickets, fruit flies, moths and flies.

Prey

This is a rat. It is hunted by snakes, hawks, owls, foxes, and cats.

Interdependence

Earthworms are interdependent. They take in nutrients from the dead pants and animals they eat. Then they excrete wastes rich in nitrogen and phosphorus back into the soil. Earthworms also help loosen the soil so air can circulate and help plants grow.
