The following slide show addresses gambling, our youth, and the potential risks

associated with it.

Oregon’s Gambling Services Program strongly encourages you to include problem gambling when discussing addiction issues with your students.

Here’s why. . .

What about gambling?

What about gambling?

Students today are increasingly being exposed to gambling opportunities - on the Internet, in the community, at home and even at church - so it's no surprise that problems associated with gambling are

being seen in youth.

• The featured data comes from the Oregon Student Wellness Survey, an anonymous and voluntary survey of 6th, 8th and 11th grade youth, conducted in the spring of 2010.

• The Survey was designed to assess a wide range of topics that included school climate, positive youth development, mental health, substance use, problem gambling, fighting and other problem behaviors.

There were 52,635 surveys collected from 35 counties, representing 458

schools in 138 public school districts.

The “Lie/Bet” screen…The last two questions are based on a valid and reliable problem gambling screening instrument which has been

used for many years; saying yes to either of these is highly correlated to a potential gambling problem and indicates a need for further assessment by a trained counselor.

Does this mean that youth who gamble also drink, smoke, use drugs,

and are delinquents?

Spacebar to advance slide

NO

Spacebar to advance slide

It means that those kids that gamble also tend to participate in other high

risk behaviors…

Spacebar to advance slide

It means that youth who gamble are at higher risk for other risky

behaviors…

Spacebar to advance slide

… and those who use drugs, drink, smoke, and are depressed, are at higher risk to develop gambling

problems.

Spacebar to advance slide

It means that whenever a unit on substance use is introduced in the classroom, GAMBLING should be

included.

So. . .how do we do that?

How about getting “artsy” about it?
