What is a printer??

A printer is a A printer is a peripheral which makes peripheral which makes a persistent human a persistent human readable representation readable representation of graphics or text on of graphics or text on paper or similar physical paper or similar physical media.media.

Uses, Details of functionalities

Things to be taken care of

• Color: color or black and white• Resolution: measured in dots per inches.(dpi)• Speed: measured in cps(characters per second) or ppm(pages

per minute).• Graphics: Some printers can print both text and graphics and

some text only.• Fonts: Depends on printer types. Two types Bitmap and outline

font.• Memory: Large image or table printing depends on memory.

Printer drivers, languages and interfaces

• Printer driver is a piece of software that converts the data to be printed to the form specific to a printer.

Language• postscript• Printer control language.

Uses of printers

• Transfer printed images to Wood or Metal.• Print on Fabric for Custom Clothing• Print Gift Bags and Photo Cakes.• Create your own labels and decals.

Types of printers

DETAILS ON IMPACT PRINTERS

Impact printers

• Refers to a class of printers that work by banging a head or needle against an ink ribbon to make a mark on the paper.• Tends to be more noisier than non impact printer.• Useful for multipart forms such as invoices.

Daisy wheel printer

works on same principle as a ball head typewriter.

consists of a wheel scattered extensions

loud and slow on which molded metal cannot print graphics we can change fonts only when we

physically replace the print wheel. printing speed is very slow, i.e. less

than 90 cps.

Dot Matrix Printer

Forms one character at a time as the print head moves cross the paper. Use tiny pins to hit an ink ribbon and the paper. Arranges dots to form characters and all kind of images. Varies in print resolution and overall quality with either 9 or 24 – pin print heads. More pins per inch, higher the print resolution. Speed is 30 to 550 cps. Most noise, low print quality. Inexpensive, energy efficient.

Line printer

Allows multiple characters to be simultaneously printed on the same line. Faster than dot matrix or daisy wheel, quite loud.

DRUM PRINTER•Prints only the characters on the drum.•Share features with chain printer as both print at high speed.

Chain printer Has a set of metal characters and numbers arranged in a continuous loop. Print speeds up to several hundreds of lines per minute Character set is limited to whatever chain contains to the from specific to a printer. Faster and more expensive than dot matrix.

BAND PRINTER•Variation of chain printers.•A thin steel band is used instead of a chain.•Data products ( well known manufacturers ) .

DETAILS ON NON IMPACT PRINTERS

What is a non impact printer?

• Printers that produce output on paper without striking the paper.

• faster and produce high quality output than impact printer

Types of non impact printers

• laser printer• Inkjet Printer• Thermal Printer• Photo Printer

Laser Printer

• Fastest and high quality non impact printer.• has a special drum

isnide it.• 300 to 1200 dpi.• Printing speed 32

ppm to 200 ppm.

Inkjet Printer

• creates output on paper by spraying tiny drops of liquid ink.• Has print-head that

can spray very fine drops of ink.• 300 to 720 dpi.• Low price and slower

than laser.• Sped 1 - 6 ppm

Thermal and Photo Printer

THERMAL PRINTER•Produces a printed image by selectively heating coated thermal paper.

PHOTO PRINTER•Designed specifically for printing photos and can print photos of a quality approaching that of a professional photofinisher.

Our dependencies on printers

Our dependencies on printers

Printer plays a vital role in reducing the extra time and resources in Many areas like:1.Office 2.Commercial and mass communication3.Studios and Photography4.Infrastructure development5.Home and Personal Use

Office use

In office working environment printers are used in numbers the printers used are :-1.Laser Printer2.Inkjet Printer3.Multifunctional Printer

Infrastructure development and science

For infrastructure development we use 3d or plotter printers

For Home and personal use

Personal use printers should be cheap and home use printers should have the feature so that it can be used by multiple persons even from smart phones.

So the preferred printers are Inkjet and Wi-Fi printers.

Market Updates and latest advancements

Multifunctional Printers

• MFP• multifunctional printer/ peripheral/product• used in offices mainly• Centralized document management• functions:

1. email2. fax3. photocopier4. printer 5. scanner

Types of Multifunctional Printers

1. All in one•Less space•mainly print, scan•least expensive of all mfps•hardwired or wifi connected

2. Small office/ Home MFP•costlier•proffesional use•print,copy,scan,fax•some have digital authentication,storage and retrieval,faster output

3. Office MFP•most efficient in workplace•basic work: print,fax,copy,scan•enhanched security protocol,run custom made softwares•ability to holepunch,staple,bound coroperate reports

Inkless Printers

Now at this present century… why waste ink and paper?? •Major innovations in printing don't come around very often. The last one was the inkjet printer, in 1976.•We have got inkless printers!!

How does it work??•It uses thermo sensitive paper instead of normal paper. Electric signal produces heat on specific parts according to the original picture to turn it into colour.

Advantages->No liquid no inkLight weight, small, portable easilyEnvironment friendly paper usedNo drying of inkDirect and easy connection to camera ,mobilesEasy maintenance

Disadvantages->

Thermo electric paper not easily availableNormal paper can’t be usedThe thermo-sensitive paper is costlier than the printer ink and you have to spend more money for printing.

3D printers

3D printing is a new stepping stone in the world of printing. We make what we see…How does it work??

•Its called additive printing.•Successive layers of material are added under computer control onto a powder bed with a special type of inkjet printers.•Also called rapid prototyping.•The machine is reasonably sized from different manufacturers like MakerBot and there are a numerous types to it.
