DURING THE 2003 EARTHQUAKE DISASTER IN BOUMERDES:
- MORE THAN 103 SCHOOL BUILDINGS WERE DESTROYED AND;
- APPROXIMATELY 753 OTHERS WERE SERIOUSLY DAMAGED.

New school during constructing were damaged by the 2003 Boumerdes Earthquake

SUCH DAMAGE CAUSES ENORMOUS FINANCIAL LOSS TO THE GOVERNMENT.
AFTER THE EVENT OF 2003 BOUMERDES EARTHQUAKE, IN THE PROVINCES OF BOUMERDES AND ALGIERS, 100 PRIMARY SCHOOLS WERE COMPLETELY REBUILT FOR THE SUM OF U.S.$4.28 MILLION AND 253 REHABILITATED FOR U.S.$10.65 MILLION, ACCORDING TO THE MINISTRY OF NATIONAL EDUCATION.
IN ADDITION, 12 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS WERE COMPLETELY REBUILT FOR THE SUM OF U.S.$10.28 MILLION AND 111 REHABILITATED FOR U.S.$ 20.85. ALSO, 10 HIGH SCHOOLS WERE REBUILT FOR THE SUM OF U.S. $ 21.42 MILLION, AND 58 WERE REHABILITATED FOR U.S.$12 MILLION.
WHY SCHOOL CHILDREN
THEY ARE FUTURES
THEY ARE ABOUT 1/4 OF ALGERIAN’S POPULATION
THEY ARE ONE OF THE MOST VULNERABLE GROUP OF SOCIETY
THEY HAVE HIGH CAPACITY FOR LEARNING
THEY CAN EASILY TRANSFER WHAT THEY HAVE LEARNT

THIS PROGRAMME WAS INTRODUCED RIGHT AFTER THE BOUMERDES 2003 EARTHQUAKE:
IN THE PRIMARY SCHOOLS: IN THE WAKE OF THE BOUMERDES 2003 EARTHQUAKE, DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR 2005 STORIES ABOUT THE BOUMERDES EARTHQUAKE WERE INTRODUCED FOR CHILDREN FROM THE SECOND YEAR AS ONE LESSON. DURING THE WHOLE SIX YEAR PERIOD OF THE PRIMARY SCHOOL, CHILDREN ARE TAUGHT ABOUT NATURAL DISASTERS AS A STORY AS ONE LESSON PER YEAR.
DURING THE THREE YEAR PERIOD OF THE SECONDARY SCHOOL, CHILDREN ARE TAUGHT ABOUT OTHER NATURAL PHENOMENA; MAINLY ABOUT EARTHQUAKES, FLOODS, VOLCANOS, ETC., BUT ALSO AS ONE LESSON PER SCHOOL YEAR.
IN HIGH SCHOOL, CHILDREN ARE TAUGHT ABOUT GEOLOGY, PLATE TECTONICS, EARTHQUAKES, VOLCANOES, etc.

A l’extérieur,Je me protège la tête des objets qui tombent etje reste éloigné:- Des bâtiments- Des lignes électriques
En voiture,Je m’arrête et, je ne descends pas avant la findes secousses
Je m’occupe de l’urgence
Je suis les instructions
Je ne gêne pas le travail des secours
1- Eau potable
2- Réserves de nourriture (boites de conserve) et de lait en poudrepour bébé
3- Trousse de secours
4- Radio portative, lampe torche, piles de réserve, allumettes
5- Argent liquide, papiers d’identité, carnet d’adresses et de téléphones
6- Vêtements, médicaments, lunettes de rechange et autres accessoiresutiles en fonction des besoins de ma famille
7- Sifflet
8- Petit outillage (canif, clef à molette, ficelle…)
9- Couvertures

WHAT WE ARE PREPARING TO DO
THE MINISTRY OF NATIONAL EDUCATION (PRIMARY, SECONDARY, HIGH SCHOOL) HAS ORGANIZED A TWO DAY MEETING (25 – 26 DECEMBER 2005) REGROUPING SCHOOL TEACHERS, UNIVERSITY PROFESSORS, SCIENTISTS FROM THE RESEARCH INSTITUTES OF SEISMOLOGY AND EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING AND MEMBERS FROM THE ALGERIAN RED CRESCENT SOCIETY TO DISCUSS AN OFFICIAL PROGRAMME TO INTRODUCE AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE IN THE THREE LEVEL OF EDUCATION.
THIS COMMISSION HAS TO THINK ABOUT THE NEW COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAMME ABOUT DISASTER RISK REDUCTION TO INTRODUCE THE SYLLABUS OF EDUCATION.
THE COMMISSION HAS MADE ITS RECOMMENDATIONS AND THE WORK ON THE PROGRAMME IS BEING WORKED OUT AT THE MINISTRY OF NATIONAL EDUCATION AND SHOULD BE SUBMITTED AGAIN TO THE COMMISSION FOR REVIEW.
