PERSANILITY OF BHAGAT SINGH

INTRODUCTION

Shaheed Bhagat Singhji was born on 28 September 1907,in Lallpur, in Punjab, but now it is the part of Pakistan.

He has been entitled as shaheed which means a great soul or martyr.

He lived a short but worth full life, he passed at the age of 23 on 23rd march 1931.

FAMILY

BHAGAT SINGH was born in “SANDHU” family ,a tribe found in Punjab.

Son of Sardar Kishan Singh Sandhu and vidhyavati, he was their 2nd child.

Patriotism was in his blood , his father and uncle AJIT SINGH were a revolutionary and at the time of Bhagat’s birth his father and uncle were in jail due to there connection in Canal Coloniztion bill agitation.

Bhagat Singh, a great reader and thinker was able to break the jail conditions, even when officially not allowed he was reading and writing but finally after long hunger strike got the right of reading & writing included in Jail Manuals Thus he maintained a note book of 404 pages and kept notes & quotes from the books he read. EDUCATION

He passed his 5th class from his school at village then he joined Dayanand Anglo-Vedic school.

But in the call of Mahatma Gandhi and other national leaders to boycott government aided institutions and british goods he gave up his school and joined National college at Lahore and tored his all text books published by british govt.

He used to study the books based on European revolutionary movement so he was attached to communism.

He was deeply touched by the incident of “JALIANWALA BAGH”.

He went to that spot and collected soil in his lunch box and kept it as a memory for life.

At the age of 13 Bhagat Singh joined Ghandhiji in his non-cooperation movement.

But was very dissapointed when Gandhiji abondoned this movement.

Bhagat Singh loved his nation and his parents also.

He was just 8yrs old when his father died on 16th November 1915.

When Bhagat Singh was arrested a photo of his father was found in his pocket. This shows his love to his father.

Once he was asked for his marriage. He said,

“If my marriage is to take place in slave India, my bride shall be death.”

LEADERSHIP

And was a very effective person he motivated the youth to participate in revolution.

He was the founder of HSRS i.e. Hindustan Socialist Republican Association.

CO-OPERATIVE

Bhagat , Rajguru, sukhdev all were members of HSRA all worked together co-operating each other, they used to educate people, distribute food to hungry children and work in flooded area and organise all the meetings very peacefully.

FEARLESS

As the death of Lala Lajpat Rai had a great influence on him, he took a vow to take the revenge as Lala was a good friend of his father.

He shot dead a British officer Mr. Sanders instead of Mr. Scott.

After shooting he left to calcutta disguised as a wealthy personage and was quiet for sometime but soon he became active again.

BOMBARDING IN ASSEMBLY:-

He was against the policy called ‘The Defence Of Indian Act’

They threw fake bombs in the assembly that only made sound and started shouting ‘Inquilab Zindabad’ and then flew some leaflets saying “It takes a loud voice to make a deaf hear” and then he and his companions surrendered themselves to police.

FIGHTING SPIRIT

He was jailed first time at the age of 20.Once when he was in a jail, he did a food strike of 63 days demanding same treatment, food and facilities as british prisoners or rich indian politician prisoner got.

PATRIOTIC

Bhagat singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were sentenced to death on 7th oct 1930.

They started shouting slogans “Inquilab Zindabad” “ Down Down Union Government” “Up Up National Flag” “Down With British Imperialism”

He kissed the gallows on 23rd march 1931 at 7:00 pm in Lahore jail.

Their bodies were taken to firozpur on the bank of satluj. The same night they were ceremented.

The next day commarades collected the bodily remains from ceremation site and a procession was taken out in Lahore.

Moaning was also spontaneous and wide-spread.

In 1950, after independence, the land where Bhagat singh and his companions were ceremated was procured from pakistan and a memorial was built.

In march 1961 a shahidi mela was held there. Every year, on 23rd march martyr’s memory is similarly honoured.

In 1971 the old memorial which was destroyed in Indo-Pak war has been rebuild.

Bhagati Singh is remembered by the endearing title of ‘Shahid-e-Azam’, the greatest of martyrs.
