What? Where? When? Why? Other curiosities
Bonfire Night
What is Bonfire Night?
It is an annual festivity in which people gather to see fireworks and bonfires at night.
Where?
Bonfire Night is celebrated in Great Britain.
When does it take place?
It takes place on November the fifth.
Why? Because on November the 5th 1605, Guy Fawkes, a member of the Gunpowder Plot, was arrested while guarding explosives the plotters had placed beneath the House of Lords. Celebrating the fact that King James I had survived the attempt on his life, people lit bonfires around London.
Bonfire Night is also known as…
Guy Fawkes Night/DayFirework Night
Now, listen to the following poemRemember, remember the fifth of NovemberThe gunpowder treason and plot.I know of no reason why the gunpowder treasonShould ever be forgot.
Remember, remember, the fifth of November,The gunpowder treason and plot.A stick or a stake for King James' sakeWill you please to give us a fagotIf you can't give us one, we'll take two;The better for us and the worse for you!
