Outline

• Background• Study Area• Methods• Results• Analysis• Conclusion

Background

• CSUN needed an updated irrigation database and map

• STEM ‘N Sustainability Program looking for summer internships• Sponsored by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power• Coordinated by CSUN’s CGS, LATTC, and LAUSD

• Summer 2017 Irrigation Internship

• Project Goals• Map Irrigation Box

• Map Sprinkler Stations

• Add Irrigation datato the campus GISDatabase

• Controller points • Walkway lines • Landscape polygons • Building Footprints • Pools and Ponds

• Using GPS

• Base and Rover Station• Institute for Sustainability

• Record Attribute information with the Survey 123 for ArcGIS app

Study Area

Methods

• Irrigation Specialist• Flag and identify irrigation boxes

• Take GPS Coordinates of Irrigation Boxes• Record using a unique identifier• Import GPS points into ArcMap

(Display X,Y Data Tool)• Define Projection NAD83 Zone 5 in meters

• Record Attributes Using ArcGIS Survey 123• Record unique identifier• Download and export to spreadsheet• Join to GPS data (Join Tool)

• ArcGIS Collector for backup• Record unique identifier• Using 2013 aerial imagery place points

• Draw Sprinkler Stations • Remote Controller• Record Controller – Stations Number• In lab use Cut and Merge Tools to edit the landscape layer into sprinkler

stations

• Identify Landscape Types• Turf• Planter• Bubbler

Results

• GIS Database• Irrigation Points• Sprinkler Stations Polygons

• Web Application

• PDF/ Print Map Book

Analysis

• Irrigation Boxes• 884 Boxes Mapped• Most Common Box Types:

• (404) Remote Control Valves – Controller remotely turns on the valve that turns sprinklers on

• (161) Quick Coupler Valve – Access water in sprinkler system with a tap/ faucet

• (105) Gate/ Ball Valve – Manual water shut off

• Sprinkler Stations• (441) Sprinkler Stations drawn• 28% (or 25.5 acres) of the main

campus landscape was mapped • 65 acres to go

• Water Use Analysis

• Time Series Animationhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6F57ADKKoww&feature=youtu.be

Vegetation Analysis

Conclusion

• Benefits of cross campus partnerships• CGS, IS, FPDC, and PPM

• Utilize and Encourage Students Interested in STEM Related Fields• LADWP Sponsored STEM ‘N Sustainability Program• Provided training and work related experience to interns

• GIS Database, Application, and Map Book• Helping PPM

• Continue Project• August 1, 2018

• Water Flow Analysis• Visualize Water Use Awareness
