writer. In his stories, he talked about the life of ordinary people specifically of Newyork city.

O’henry ‘s original name was william sidney porter.

His passion of writing short stories started when he was in Ohio prison for three years.

Humour and surprise ending as well as irony mark his stories. He was a lover of classic litrature.

His most popular works include THE LAST LEAF and THE GIFT OF THE MAGI.

Characters of story… Mr. Harvey maxwell: A Broker in NewYork Stock

Exchange.

Miss Leslie: Stenographer to Mr. Maxwell.

Mr pitcher: Personal Clerk of Mr.Maxwell.

Introduction to story… An extremely well knit story by O’Henry, it

reflects romance, love, and forgetful nature of a broker.

There are three characters in story- Mr.HarveyMaxwell, his stenographer Leslie, and Mr.Pitcher, the confidential clerk.

The story commences with the entry of Miss Lislie in the office. Mr.Pitcher could sense something different in the day but Mr.Maxwellseems to be acting normal and as usual got absorbed in office tasks.

Miss Lislie is described as simple, yet elegant and beautiful. She enquired from Mr.Pitcher if Mr.Maxwell wanted him to look stenographs to which Pitcher agreed.Lislie said she would continue to work till the replacement happens.

A new girl walked in pompously in the office and surprised Mr.Maxwell as he could not recall, when he had asked for such replacement. He ordered Mr. Pitcher not to replace Miss Lislie with enyone. Mr. Pitcher was unable to comprehend what was happening.

After the busy day, when the work pressure mitigated, Mr. Maxwell caught the fregrance of Miss Lislie.

He approched her and in front of all the office staff admitted that he loved her a lot and wanted to marry her.

Miss Lislie could not control her tears and pitied that Maxwell was so over worked that he had forgotten that they tied the knot the privious evening.

Miss Lislie told Mr.Maxwell that he had married with her the day before.

End of Story… The end of the story is interesting because it

reflects the extreme case of forgetfulness of Mr. Maxwell.

We get that….Don’t be busy in your work that you can’t give your golden time to your love….
