LumeLighting

Design IntentTo create a desk lamp from walnut wood and sheet metal. The desk lamp will incorperate movement, mood lighting and curvature.

ResearchThe sides of my desk lamp come from the movement of bird

wings. These other designer lamps gave me more insight on fa-miliar lamp forms. As for veneer, I learned many methods on how

to soak or iron veneer. I choose to use veneer for the sides on the lamp because it is the thinnest and most flexible wood.

InspirationI was inspired by the spread open wings of a hum-mingbird, the flexible curve of veneer and the uniqeness of a zebra.

Design Ideation

Mock upsAt first, I prototyped with one set of wings varying in different angles. Then I played with the idea of one or multiple movable sides. From there I decided to design the base to be leaning slightly back.

Process

-Cut and drill holes into the walnut base.

-Glue and laser cut three layers of veneer.

-Cut and sand and drill hole into the sheet metal. -Epoxy the veneer to the sheet metal.

-Thread the cord through the base and wire the light bulb.

-Screw the moveable wings to the wooden base.

VicioServing Spoon AD 213

Design IntentTo design a sophisticated, functional serving utensil. Using cherry wood, I intend to create a serving spoon that is dainty to the touch yet strong enough th withstand the stresses of cook-ing. To design a utensil that boosts culinary skills and keeps those chefs coming back for more.

Research and InspirationLooking at various serving utensils, I fell in love with the serving spoon. Spoons are used to mix, to cook on the stove or to serve food. The problem I saw in wooden spoons was that some heads were to wide or round like the pictures in Mimi Robinson and Ariele Alasko’s spoons. The pointed serving utensil in Joshua Vogel’s picture allows for cooks to get in the creases of their pans. I gained inspiration from Ariele Alasko’s many spoon handles and I looked at the curvature of leaves when they are under the pressure of holding water.

Soarin’Modular Fruit Bowl AD 256

Design IntentTo design a bowl-like container that can hold fruit as small as a grape or as heavy as an apple. This fruit bowl will be made up of identical interlocking parts. My goal is to design a weighless object that is stable and can hold my favorite kind of apple, Honey Crisp. My objectives for the bowl are to inspire curiosity, captivate and be light.

Flight Movement Intensity Jointry

Research and InspirationI obtained research and ideation from the elements of

wind and water. There are many ways of joining objects such as houseing joints, loose tongue joint and scarf joint. The slots seen in the wooden circle is the type of design I want to incorporate in my bowl. This slot allows for two or more pieces to join together with little or no need for

glue.

My final design was called “Soarin’” because it emulated birds’ wings. The feeling of freedom and movement is por-trayed in the curved structure that encompasses the fruit

being held in the open wings. This modular bowl is elegant-ly designed yet holds a fiery passion.

SolAiirSolar Powered Water Pump and Charging Station

Process// Water SupplyThe objective of this project was to create an aluminum extrusion and research the many strengths of extrusions. A design was created that focused on the strengths of extrusions while keeping in mind the requirments as well as theWW restrictions.

Design A public energy-efficient water pump and charging station for com-munities in need of clean water.

Research// RwandaThe small country of Rwanda is ranked the ‘9th Thirstiest Countries in the World”, according to Wishing Well Organization. %80 of the worlds diseas- es are from unclean water. The lack of access to water in many third world com-munities robs children of their much needed water.

Option// Solar PowerSolar power energy is being used more frequently as many scientists are find-ing more applications for this new source of energy. According to National Geographic, solar energy is lauded as an inexhaustible fuel source that is pol-lution and often noise free.

PiraCandy Dish AD 256

Design Intent To design a dish that has a little spunk of its own. My past designs have been organic and I did not have to measure

much. This time I plan to design a geometric dish that required precise

measuring and a thought out plan.

Research/InspirationMachu Pichu, an aztec ruin, inspired me to look into the old past and find designs in its ageless beauty. I looked at he colorful and patterned tra- di-tional garb of the peruvian girl and the woven ribbon. The baby jaguar gave me the inspiration to have a little edge in my design.

Ideation and Orthographics

Ideation and Orthographics

Some problems with the first mockup was that is was too simple, yet the second mockup had bad undercuts.

Mockup number two was broken in the process of getting the mold out and parts of the mold were still in the candy dish.

The triangles on the final design were flipped so that there would be no under-cuts. This kept the design interesting and not too simple.
