ROSAMOND KEMBERPORTFOLIO 2013

ROUSE HILL TRANSIT HUBTHE NSW GOVERNMENT HAS PROMISED A TRAIN LINE OUT TO ROUSE HILL FOR YEARS; ROUSE HILL ITSELF WAS DEVELOPED ON THAT PREMISE, HOWEVER CURRENTLY THE SITE IS OCCUPIED WITH CAR PARKS, BLANK WALLS AND A FEW BIKE STANDS. IF RESIDENTS NEED TO COMMUTE INTO SYDNEY THEY MUST RELY ON TOLL ROADS OR AN HOUR AND A HALF BUS RIDE. THIS PROJECT EXPLORES THE POSSIBILITY OF CREATING A TRANSIT HUB WITH A CIVIC PRESENCE; A GATEWAY TO ROUSE HILL IN THE MANNER OF 19TH CENTURY TRAIN STATIONS, BEFORE AEROPLANES AND AIRPORTS WERE INVENTED.

THIS WAS A JOINT PROJECT WITH JENNIFER FLEMING FOR A FOURTH YEAR DESIGN STUDIO AT UNSW RUN BY CHRIS ABEL.

THE PROJECT WAS A UNSW NOMINATION FOR RAIA PARTRIDGE PARTNERS AWARD FOR STRUCTURE IN ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 2010

SOFTWARE USED: 3DS MAX, SKETCHUP, REVIT, VRAY

SITUATION ENGINETHIS IS A VIRTUAL SUBURB FOR CONSTRUCTION AND ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS TO “VISIT” USING THE CRYENGINE FREE SDK. AN UNDERSTANDING OF STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS, CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES, PRACTICES AND BCA REQUIREMENTS WAS REQUIRED IN ORDER TO CORRECTLY MODEL AND REPRESENT THE BUILDINGS. ONE HOUSE WAS MODELLED AND REPLICATED THROUGHOUT THE SUBURB AT VARIOUS STAGES OF CONSTRUCTION.

SOFTWARE USED: 3DS MAX, SKETCHUP, PHOTOSHOP, CRAZYBUMP, CRYENGINE

NYC IN CRYENGINEAN EXERCISE IN THE OSM > CITYENGINE > 3DS MAX > CRYENGINE PIPELINE. STREET DATA WAS DOWNLOADED FROM OSM AND IMPORTED INTO CITYENGINE. A PROCEDURAL CITY WAS CREATED USING A PYTHON SCRIPT, WHICH WAS THEN EXPORTED FOR 3DS MAX, WHERE IT WAS PREPARED FOR EXPORT INTO CRYENGINE. THE RESULT IS A DENSE CITYSCAPE OF NEW YORK, AND THE ABILITY TO WALK AROUND THE STREETS OF NEW YORK IN REAL TIME.

PARAMETRIC BRUTALISMTHIS ANIMATION IS A RESPONSE TO THE ESSAY “FIDDLING WHILE THE WORLD BURNS” BY SPILLER, N. (2010). EVEN WITH ADVANCES IN COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY AND THE BENEFIT OF HINDSIGHT OUR CITIES ARE STILL BEING POPULATED BY NONDESCRIPT, THOUGHTLESS HOUSING COMMISSION STYLE ARCHITECTURE.

MINIMAL SURFACEA 2M SCULPTURE MADE FROM 250 LASER CUT POLYPROPYLENE PIECES TIED TOGETHER WITH CABLE TIES. THIS WAS THE EASIEST MODEL I HAVE MADE; ALL THE PIECES AND THE JUNCTIONS BETWEEN THEM WERE LABELLED WITH TAGS.

VIRTUAL MALL

SOFTWARE USED: 3DS MAX, UDK

A MALL MODELLED IN 3DS MAX AND IMPORTED INTO UDK. THE GAME ENGINE PROVIDES THE ABILITY TO WALK AROUND THE MALL IN FIRST-PERSON VIEW. AVAILABLE ON IPHONE AND IPAD. 3DS MODELLING WORK DONE FOR INENI.CO.

LAST GAME ON EARTH

SOFTWARE USED: 3DS MAX, UNITY

A COLLABORATION WITH STEPHEN DAVEY AND BAHRAM BATENI, USING 3DS MAX AND UNITY. THE PLAYER HAS TO MANIPULATE THE THREE CHARACTERS - A POLITICIAN, A SCIENTIST AND A RUGBY PLAYER - TO COOPERATE AND UTILISE EACH CHARACTER’S STRENGTHS IN ORDER TO SAVE THE WORLD!

SKETCH INSTRUCTIONSDOCUMENTING THE PROCESS OF LEARNING HOW TO MODEL IN 3DS MAX VIA A YOUTUBE TUTORIAL.

POINTCLOUD SKETCHESA COLLECTION OF IMAGES GENERATED FROM A PROCESS OF PHOTOSYNTHING MULTIPLE PHOTOS OF A STREET SCAPE TOGETHER TO CREATE A POINT CLOUD. THIS POINT CLOUD WAS THEN BROUGHT INTO 3DS MAX AND FORMS THEN GENERATED FROM THE POINTS. AN IPHONE WAS USED AS A TRACKPAD TO DRAW LINES BETWEEN THE DOTS.

SOFTWARE USED: PHOTOSYNTH, MESHLAB, 3DS MAX

LICENSE TO DRIVETHIS PROJECT INVOLVED 3 HOUSES FOR A PILOT, A COPILOT AND A FLIGHT ENGINEER. IT IS BASED ON THE PREMISE THAT PILOTS ARE “INCLINED TO MODIFY THEIR ENVIRONMENT RATHER THAN THEIR BEHAVIOUR,” AND HAVE THE SKILLS TO DO SO.

THE PROJECT ALSO LOOKED AT HOW THE CITY OF SYDNEY COUNCIL SOLD SMALL UNCLAIMED PARCELS OF LAND, AS A WAY OF RECUPERATING LOST TAXES.
