What will be the workspaces in 20 years time? The client, Davison Highley, a British family company in the furniture market, proposed us to create a workspace for the year 2038. From researches in various areas with the aim to respond for a futuristic project, I researched the human evolution and needs, materials and spaces, how they can interact with human beings and what we need in this spaces, as we spend most of our days in our work environment. In research I came across a need for healthier spaces of work, as we are everyday more allergic and intolerant to some food and ingredients, on the other hand the frenetic world of work that most of the people do not even have time to leave the desk to prepare a healthy meal or stretch the body. From that issue, came the idea of educate the employees by proposing them a healthier lifestyle. The raw food diet is known as chemical free treatment for food intolerances, and can really help the human body to absorb the nutrients from the food. Aiming to propose a healthier way of living, and make the companies more productive and consequently happier employees.

The proposal was a raw food space to make people connect with themselves. Based on reserch, the suggestion was a raw food space where you would nurture yourself, mind and body. In this space you would learn how to prepare fresh meals for yourself and loved ones, and do some activities with hands and nature, as it can reduce anxienty and depression. To make the space the environment of the space th inspiration was the four elements that can be seen in the finishes of the space. Building regulations were considered and environmental aspects were studied as was used mostly raw materials.

feature staircase The second phase of the project with Davison Highley was a feature staircase. Thinking of incorporate the four elements and the nurturing aspect of the space, the staircase has the idea of disconnecting with the outside world and connecting with yourself while you go down the stairs. From the four elements we explore water, by the rain, as it can water the plants around the staircase, and earth by the the plants going up the stairs, around the handrails and mesh. This staircase is compliant with Building Regulations and the impact on environment was considered as the main material is stainless steel unfinished that can be 100% recycled.

Based on my own experiences with my father and from my own experiences as a child of a single parent, I could understand how trapped you feel when you are alone and you have another life that depends of you, but at the same time you don’t have a life for yourself. Thinking of it, I tried to make analogies of what single parents need most, and “support” was one of the words that came, following that, “hands that care”, and by decomposing the shape and movement of the hands, and how a family, and community acts like, came “enlace”. From “enlace” I brought the organic shapes of hands and curves, that I reproduced in the space and in the façade. Inside, from all the areas you can see the child play area, and is a place where support and community feeling is everywhere, so no staring eyes, instead a place where everybody is in the same boat, living the same issues, and maybe you have a valuable advice you can share.

At Enlace, I would like that the families could experience the support of a community, that they can make friends, and the children can make friends too, a place where they can feel welcomed and understood. A place where the parents can pursue they dreams while the children are being cared by someone else. Is a place where they can get educated, informed and supported.
