Their source of water in the community is a communal tap that serves more than 200 households.

The condition in and around the school is very unhygienic the place is filthy

LAND POLLUTION

ObjectivesTo highlight the sources of water pollution in

informal settlementsTo teach learners and the community about

the possible dangers of water contaminated to health

To teach learners about the dangers of Land pollution

WASTED WATER

InvestigationIn our school it was

found that most learners were suffering from diarrhoea and skin related condition.

We conducted an investigation to determine the cause.

During our investigation it was found that at home our learners use water from a communal tap.

CLEANING CAMPAIGNGrade 4 were cleaning

near the school, the sport is used as a dumping site by the community.

CLEANING CAMPAIGN-CONT.

ChallengesWater from the communal tap is collected

using buckets or containers, which are not always clean and not covered to protect the water from being polluted.

From the tap there are many possibilities of water being contaminated e.g. coming into contact with a dirty bucket or container, hands, dust etc

Challenges-ContinuedCommunal taps are not protected any one

even animals can come into contact with the tap and be a source of contamination.

If water is contaminated it can easily spread bacteria or any other organism to a number of people in a very short space of time.

A filthy place can easily spread diseases to an unhealthy community.

Shortage of Water

SOLUTIONSWe started a health education programme

where learners are educated about the hygienic handling of water including the following:

The cleaning of buckets or containers used to collect water.
