There is a legend of three brothers who founded

the Slavic nations of Poland, Czech and Russia.

The three brothers, Lech, Czech and Rus went

hunting together but each of them followed

a different prey and eventually they all traveled in different directions. Rus went to the east, Czech headed to the west to settle on the Ríp Mountain, while Lech traveled to the north until he came across a magnificent white eagle guarding her nest. Startled but impressed by this spectacle, he decided to settle there. He named his settlement Gniezno (adjective from gniazdo, or "nest") and adopted the White Eagle as his coat-of-arms which remains a symbol of Poland to this day.

Mazurek Dąbrowskiego (Dąbrowski's Mazurka) is Polish national anthem. It is a lively folk dance with patriotic words written shortly after the country lost its independence in a series of partitions by Austria, Russia, Prussia (1772, 1791, 1795).
