Childrenwhohavecomplexcommunicationneedsorhaveonlylimitedspeech,inadditiontootherchallenges,often

struggletointeractandcommunicate.Thismayincludechildrenwhohavephysicaldisabilities,multipledisabilities,

sensoryprocessingchallenges,limitedsocialinteractionskills,and/orarangeofcognitivelimitationsandlearning

difficulties.

Thistwo-daycoursewilldemonstratetheuseofaPragmaticOrganizationDynamicDisplay(PODD)approach

developedbyGaylePorter(Melbourne,Australia).Generictemplatesformulti-page“lighttech”communication

bookshavebeencarefullydesignedtosupportgenuinecommunicationforavarietyoffunctionsthroughoutthe

day.Thesetemplatesmaybecustomizedforarangeofaccessmethodsandotherindividualneeds.

Comelearnstrategiesforcreatingmulti-modallanguagelearningenvironmentsthatprovidereceptivemodelsand

expressiveopportunitiesforlanguagedevelopment.LearnstrategiesforteachingandusingPODDwithchildrenand

theircommunicationpartners.Videosandcaseexampleswillbeshared.Participantswillhaveanopportunityfor

hands-onpracticewithPODDCommunicationbooks.

Participantswillbeableto:

• Describethechallengesfacedbyprofessionalscreatingcommunicationsystemsintermsofvocabulary

organization,layout,design,rangeofaccessstrategiesandcustomizingforindividualrequirements.

• Discusstheimportanceofreceptivelanguageinputandcreatingalanguage-learningenvironment.

• DiscussthefeaturesofaPODDcommunicationsystemintermsofvocabularyorganization,layout,design,

rangeofaccessstrategiesandcustomizingforindividualrequirements.

• UsePODDgenerictemplateresourcestoproducecustomizedcommunicationbooks.

• DiscusstheteachingandlearningstrategiesforimplementingPODDcommunicationsystemswithstudents

andteammembers.

AboutthePresenterLindaBurkhartisawell-knownteacherandleaderinthefieldofassistivetechnology,adaptiveplay,and

augmentativecommunicationforchildrenwhofacesignificantdisabilities.Shehasconductedworkshopsand

presentationsnationallyandinternationallysince1982.Shehasalsodevelopedmanypublicationsandsoftwareto

beusedintheseareas.
