PlayMusicatPrestigiousBleachFestival2017Stringplayersandpercussionistswithminimum5thgradeAMEBplayingstandardareinvitedtoparticipateinaprogramofworkshops/rehearsalsculminatinginthepublicperformanceofSongtotheEarthbyCorrinaBonshekatthe2017BleachFestival.Bleachisthesignatureannualmulti-artsfestivaloftheGoldCoast.Itcelebratesthecity’sbestartists,featuresrenownedAustralianandinternationalcollaborators,andengagesabroadaudiencethrougharangeofaccessibleeventsthatusetheGoldCoast’sworldfamousnaturallandscapesasunconventionalvenues.Yourmusicperformancewillbeapartofacommunityengagedeventinvolvingdance,music,artinstallation,calledInherittheWind,whichcelebratesourinterconnectednesswiththeplanetearth,andtakesplaceoutsideatduskinQueenElizabethPark,CoolangattainApril2017.ViewavideowithhighlightsfromthepilotperformanceofInherittheWindatBleachFestival2015https://vimeo.com/127136304Duringrehearsalsandworkshopsyouwillgainexperiencein:

AskillhasasignificantdiscographyontheCelestialHarmoniesandBlackSunlabelsasperformer,composerandproducer.Hiscompositionforfilmincludesaward-winningscoresforDanielAskill’s‘WeHaveDecidedNotToDie’andMarkLapwood’s‘Eclipse’.HehascomposedfortheOpeningCeremoniesofthe2000SydneyOlympics,2006AsianGamesandthe2011CHOGM.HehasperformedthroughoutAustralia,Europe,theAmericas,ChinaandSouthEastAsia.

Beforeembarkingonasuccessfulindependentcareer,hewasPrincipalTimpanistwiththeMelbourneSymphonyandthenPrincipalPercussionistwiththeSydneySymphonyOrchestra.HehasbeenguestPrincipalPercussionistwiththeAucklandPhilharmoniaandTongyeong(Korea)FestivalOrchestraandin2015wassoloistwiththeIstanbulStateSymphonyOrchestraandQueenslandSymphonyOrchestra.

Hewasalsofounder,thenArtisticDirectorofSynergyPercussion,Australia’slongestestablishedcontemporarymusicensemble.Heiscurrentlyco-ArtisticDirector(withVanessaTomlinson)ofEarlyWarningSystem,aBrisbane-basedpercussiongroupreceivingcriticalacclaimfortheirperformancesofnewmusic.

Askill’spassionforexploringtheessenceofsoundhasresultedinadeepinvolvementwithsomeofAsia’smostancientinstruments–gongsandsingingbowls.HisextensiveresearchandtravellinghasresultedincloseconnectionswithgongandsingingbowlartisansinChina,NepalandIndia.Hecontinuestoexploretheseinstrumentsthroughperformance,compositionandimprovisationaswellastheirpotentialforperformerandaudienceinteraction.Hehascuratedsignificantinteractivegonginstallation/eventsincluding1000Gongs(forthe2010AustralianPercussionGathering)andGongGarden(forthe2014&2016OutoftheBoxFestivals).HeisthefirstAustralian‘GongArtist’appointedbytheSwissgongmakers,Paiste.
