G.L.A.D. Observation ChartsFor Pictures of California Regions.

1. What can you actually see in the picture, for sure?2. What questions do you have about this picture?3. What are your predictions about the picture?

Each group receives one pencil. Group members circulate together,

selecting a picture, one by one, for their response. Only one student writes at a time, based on input from

the group.Students take turns writing, and individuals put their

initials next to what they wrote.

As an extension, the pictures also have specific questions for student responses.

1. People have divided this California land into rectangles to improve their lives. How do you think this division might improve people’s lives?

2. These are high mountains in California. Long ago, what natural resources could people find here, and how would they use them?

3. California has several deserts. How do animals survive in the desert?

4. This is part of the coastline of northern California. Long ago, what were the advantages (to people or animals) of living near this

coastline?

5. California borders the Pacific Ocean, and it has a very long coastline shows part of the coast of southern California. These days, how can people have fun here?

6. How could such tall trees benefit people and animals, long ago?

7. Choosing these plants for their front yard was important to these modern day homeowners. Why?
