Whenever you look at a painting or picture (a pictorial source) you should try to use the following method to work out what the painting is showing:
P eople – who are the people? What are they doing? Why?
I tems – what things/clues can you see?
C aption – what is the piece called? What writing is there?
T hings in background – look beyond the main images
U nderlying intention – what was the reason for the artist creating the piece
R emember – apply what you already know
E xplain – put all this together to help you explain the piece
