What is Substance abuse?

• Any unnecessary or improper use of chemical substances for non-medical use

Illegal Drugs

• Also known as street drugs • Substances against the law for people of any

age to manufacture, possess, buy, or sell.

Synthetic Drugs

• Chemical Substances produced artificially in a laboratory.

Illicit Drug Use

• The use or sale of any substance that are illegal or otherwise not permitted.

Gateway Drugs

• Drugs that often lead to other serious and dangerous drug use.

Why do people start to use drugs?

• To escape problems they may be having in other parts of their life..

• Peer pressure and fitting in with another group of people

• They see everyone around them doing it • Being curious about the effects of drugs• Do not know how to say NO • They are bored so they seek a solution.

Psychoactive Drugs

• These are drugs that affect the central nervous system

• There are 4 types:– Stimulants – Depressants – Narcotics – Hallucinogens (no medical use)
