The Martian Atmosphere

- Less dense than Earth‘s atmosphere- Rayleigh Scattering has close to no impact

- Iron oxide dust is reason for color of the atmosphere

- Mie Scattering doesn‘t account for colored particles

Drawbacks

> Peter Collienne > 20.09.2013

- Rendering the atmosphere costs about 10% of framerates- Artifacts can appear over the horizon due to numerical instability

- Correcting this using interpolation results in performance-loss

- Shape of the planet is assumed to be a perfect sphere- Limited to constant density per radius

- ‚Clear-Sky‘-Model is not the perfect approximation

Conclusion

- Interactive visualization of the martian atmosphere

- Using a set of parameters derived from a physical approach and partially validated by available imagery.

- Implemented as a plugin to work with arbitrary planetary rendering frameworks
