BODDistance Sensors
PhotoelectricSensors
Optical distance sensors areused when distances ofobjects need to be measuredor monitored or their preciseposition determined.
Distance measurement isbased on the principles oftriangulation or time-of-flightmeasurement.
PSD elements or CCD arraysare used for the receivingelements, with the emitterconsisting of a red light orlaser light source.
Analog current and voltagevalues, serial interfaces anddigital outputs are availableto the user.
Applications
– Control tasks(grinding machines)
– Sensing– Object positioning– Level detection

PhotoelectricSensors
The BOD 63M in its ruggedmetal housing has a workingrange of 500...6000 mm.It features adjustablebackground suppressionand an analog output of0...10 V or 4...20 mA.
Time-of-flight measurementenables longer ranges thantriangulation-based orenergetic diffuse sensors.
A multi-turn potentiometer isused to set up the sensor.
This innovative sensortechnology with its largevariety of output types isused in applications wheretraditional methods meeteither technological oreconomical limits. Suchapplications include detectingsmall objects at greatdistances, or underchallenging conditions wherefor example under hightemperatures or in robotcells where sensing needs tobe performed from the"outside".
Features
– Small laser spot fordetecting small objectsover large distances
– Virtually independent ofthe reflective properties ofthe target object within aparticular sensing range
– Background suppression(HGA) over the entireworking range
– Analog, binary and alarmoutput
Applications
– Exact detection over longdistances(e.g. physicalinaccessibility of excessiveheat)
– Detecting objects withchanging colors, shinysurfaces or unfavorableangle to the light beam
– Flexible solutions forposition sensing, leveldetection and monitoring, distance and heightmeasurement, qualityassurance applications

BKTContrast Sensors
PhotoelectricSensors
2.2.44
Contrast sensors are high-resolution diffuse sensorsthat distinguish objectsbased on their gray values.Color, brightness andreflectivity have a strongeffect on the measuringresult.
When gray values differ onlyslightly the measuringdistance should be keptequal. The resolution of thesensor decreases withincreasing range.
A variety of models withvarious light types andfunctions are available.
Applications
– Sensing markings onpackaging material
– Synchronizing cutting orseparating processes
– Checking for adhesive, inkand color
– Position checking ofprinting templates
– Sensing objects based oncontrast

In this device the micro-processor takes over theentire setup process. Thelatter monitors andsynchronizes the emitter, receiver and output circuits, for optimum switchingfrequency, repeatability andinsensitivity to intereferenceand ambient light. The user needs only to presstwo buttons for setting thesensor for the marking andthe background.Remote control of the keyfunctions and remoteselection of 4 previouslystored contrast ratios isavailable in the cable versiondepending on lead selection. It is also possible to enablea turn-off delay or to disablethe buttons.
Features
– Selectable vertical orhorizontal light spot
– Automatic selection of redor green emitter light
– Automatic setting of light-on/dark-on function
– Remote key functionsand 4 storable programs(cable version)
– Time delay and key lockselectable
– Interchangeable optics(straight and 90°)
– Analog output
The sensor output isselectable between NPN andPNP. All models have ananalog output whose signalis proportional to the lightintensity reflected from thetarget. The sensor lens can beplaced in two positions, forsetting the exit surfacestraight or rotated 90° fromthe sensor axis. BLTLuminescence Sensors
PhotoelectricSensors
2.2.52
Photoelectric sensors usuallydetect the target or thedesired target featuresthemselves. When this isn'tpossible, markings areapplied to the object andthese are detected by thesensor. But what do you dowhen you can't apply visiblemarkings to the object?Very simple: apply invisiblemarkings!
How does that work? You use so-called fluores-cent materials (contained inspecial chalks, inks, paints, etc.), which are only visiblein ultraviolet (UV) light. Thefluorescent materials changethe invisible UV light (short-wavelength, here 380 nm)into visible light (betweenblue 450 nm and dark red780 nm). This effect is calledphoto-synthesis. The visiblelight can then be detected asusual by the receiver portionof the sensor.
Applications
– Logistics(marking, selecting)
– Assembly (guiding,monitoring, sorting)
– Packaging machines(to monitor cutting, folding)
– Ceramics(e.g., parts positioning)
– Wood industry (e.g.,controlling the glue bead)
– Pharmaceuticals(control tasks in themanufacturing process)
– Textiles(e.g., cut guiding)
– Foods industry

The Balluff luminescencesensor is equipped with amodern UV source so that noexternal UV lamp is needed.A microcontroller handles theevaluation using a teach-inprocedure. By simplypressing a button the BLTlearns the difference betweenthe fluorescent marking andthe background. If thedifference is too slight andcan not be reliablydiscriminated, this isindicated by an errormessage (flashing LED). Therange is typically from 9 to18 mm, but can be increasedby using other lenses.
Configuring two internal DIPswitches allows you to set aturn-off delay of 20 ms ordisable the buttons. ThePNP/NPN output is alsoselectable. An analog signalproportional to the lightreflected by the markingrounds out the functionalityof the BLT.

With dimensions of just50×50×17 mm and arotatable connector, theBFS 26K fits in tight areasand can be programmedeither using a control lineor by means of 2 buttonsvia teach-in.
The color tolerance can beset in 5 levels for each of the3 switching outputs(channels).
Numerous special functionssuch as color scanning, pulseexpansion and blanking inputprovide additional applicationflexibility.
