PAY TV

Developed By by

Irene receives a Centrelink Aged Pension. One day a man knocks on her door. He says she can get three months free pay TV and after that she can pay a small amount every month. She is very excited.

She invites him into her house. He says she just needs to sign the paperwork so she can get the free pay TV. She signs at once.

Irene’s daughter, Anne comes to see her.Irene tells her about her free pay TV.She shows Anne the paperwork.Anne says, “what have you done?”

Anne looks at the paperwork.

She is shocked her mother has signed for a 24 month plan which costs $120 per month.

Irene is very upset.

She cannot afford to pay $120 per month for the pay TV from her Centrelink Aged Pension.

Anne says she will ring the company and cancel the contract.

She rings the company and they say they cannot do this as Irene had signed the contract.

What did Irene do wrong?

• She agreed to sign a contract which she did not fully understand.

• She should have asked someone else to help her understand the contract before she signed it.

• She should have told the salesperson to go away as she had a “Do Not Knock” sticker on her door.

• She can make a complaint to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman.

• She can also go to see a Financial Counsellor to help her.

What can Irene do now?
