Abstract
e marine world is oen present in the everyday life of the Minoans. Marine faunal remains have been
found in connection with domestic or palatial contexts and have been associated with consumption as well as
use as raw materials in various activities. Marine remains are also present in cult and funerary deposits, thus
suggesting the possible symbolisms attributed to marine organisms by the Minoans. Among such deposits,
the shell material from Petras cemetery oers a rich and diversied funerary record.
is paper presents the material from the cemetery in a contextual approach and brings together all
available evidence from this period, extending from faunal to artistic evidence, in an attempt to shed light
on dierent rituals and beliefs associating the marine world with the aerlife.
