Profile Series:this is what we will be creating

Facial Proportions

Beginning a Profile Profile with Features

How to Draw Profiles1. Draw a circle. Divide circle

vertically in half.2. Draw a horizontal line,

slightly below half way. (This is different then in full face proportions.)

3. Where the jaw and ear meet, both slope slightly backwards

4. Note that the profile varies much more then the frontal proportions.

5. Gradually draw in features: eye, eyebrow, nose, lips, chin, neck

Tips & Tricks

Drawing the Face in Profile

Let’s use a trick to make things easier, we'll use the frontal drawing of the face, or one very similar to that used in the tutorial face drawing, as a guide to set the proportion of the side view. What I would like you to take from this tutorial is the actual structure of the face seen from the side and to notice how compressed toward the front all the facial features are

Draw the front oval of the head then trace from the top and the chin two horizontal lines. Trace also a line passing through the middle of the head like in the picture.

Now I want you to notice here, before moving further, the two main shapes that form the

head from the side: an elongated circle and a triangle. You do not need to draw this, but just be aware of it.

You can roughly position the facial features on the frontal drawing first (eyes, eyebrows, nose and mouth) then trace their relative position onto the side view using tracing lines as shown. Don’t forget the indents/contours!

Assignment:• Create 3 thumbnail sketches in

sketchbook of different pattern ideas.• Profiles should be of your self• Profiles should be filled inside and

outside with patterns that resemble Peter Max’s artwork/style: Psychedelic

• The best pattern scheme will be used to create large scale, psychedelic, self portrait.
