Objective

What is “Grooming” Importance of Personal Grooming Relation between personal

appearance and image projection

What is Grooming?

It is the process of making yourself look neat and attractive.

The things which you do to make yourself and your appearance tidy and pleasant.

Clothes and manners do not make the man; but, when he is made, they greatly

improve his appearance

Whether this is real or imaginary the most important fact is that your appearance influences the opinions of everyone around you

Your Professionalism, intelligence and the trust people form in you is mainly due to your appearance

Why Dress for Success? Your knowledge and experience should

speak for itself, but your appearance is the first impression you make, and you should want it to project professionalism

Your personal style will of course play a role in what you decide to wear, but staying within generally accepted guidelines for professional dress is the best way to project a professional image

Some of the perceptions people can form solely from your appearance are:

Your professionalism. Your level of sophistication. Your intelligence. Your credibility.

Personal Grooming habits

Grooming involves all the aspects of your body:

Overall Cleanliness Hair. Nails. Teeth. Uniform Make-up

Personal Grooming Habits:HAIR

It is your crowning glory. Keep it at a length and style at

which you can maintain it. Wash your hair at least once a

week.

Hair styles

Males: Not fall over the ears, eyebrows or

even touch the back of the collar Will always present a neat

appearance. Facial hair should be neatly

trimmed (moustache, sideburns), beards are not recommended

Hairstyles Females: Tie your hair in a neat hairstyle with

hair pulled back from face. Hair if longer than jaw line should be

tied into a bun. Should be well groomed with a neat

appearance at all times Hair holding devices should be plain and

of natural colours

Nails

Clip nails short, along their shape. A healthy body ensures healthy

nails. Brittle or discoloured nails show up

deficiencies or disease conditions.

Teeth

Brush teeth twice a day and rinse well after every meal .

Remember to rinse your mouth after every meal

For those who smoke, it is important you rinse your mouth after every smoke and use a mouth freshener

Uniform

Your uniform talks a lot about your organization.

First impressions are made within the first 5 minutes of meeting someone

A neat clean and well ironed uniform is acceptable and appreciated by one and all at all times.

Two or three button suit

A Man’s Shoes Should Be . . .

All leather, with a small heel and laces

Miscellaneous Tips for Gentlemen Hair should be cut regularly and well groomed Nails should be clean and short Gentlemen should not wear more than one ring

per hand, and no earrings or facial piercing should be worn for business attire

Handshakes should be given with a firm grip while looking the other person in the eye

Cologne and aftershave should be worn sparingly, though deodorant should always be worn

All clothing should be clean and pressed

Two or three button skirt suit

Collared dress shirt in cotton or silk

Medium heeled closed toe and closed heel shoe (pump)

A Woman’s Suit Should Be . . .

100% wool or wool with lycra

A two or three button jacket with an exact matching skirt that is no shorter than just above the knee

A solid black, navy or charcoal gray; muted pinstripe in gray or navy

Tailored to fit her

A Woman’s Dress Shirt Should Be . . .

100% cotton or silk Long sleeved, or at

least not sleeveless A point or spread

collar White, light blue,

pink or other pastels (not dark colors)

A Woman’s Shoes Should Be . . .

A medium heeled pump/flat belly

Black, navy or dark brown (black for interviews)

In excellent shape and shined

Makeup should be natural looking. Nail polish and lip color should not

be too trendy or bright. Mild fragrance. Women: stay away from extremely

dark, bright reds and fluorescent colors.
