Transcript of Perseus

PerseusKing Acrisius of Argos had only One child, Danae. The King journeyed to Delphi to ask the god if he would have a son one day.The priestess told him no but worse his daughter would have a son who would kill him.

PerseusKing Acrisius did not slay his daughter. Instead he had a house built and sunk underground.Danae would see nothing except for the clouds.Zeus visited and impregnated her.King Acrisius upon finding out about the child and had a great chest made. The two placed in it. It was then cast into the water.

PerseusThe two were discover by afisherman named Dictys. He adopted them.Polydectes fell in love with Danae. Polydectes got Perseus to go off and kill Medusa as a gift for their near marriage. Polydectes would rather have a head of a Gorgon more than anything else in the world.

PerseusHe sailed and went to Delphi ››Dodona ››Oak trees.Hermes and Athena came to help.Hermes told him that he must first be properly equipped (nymphs). He must find the Gray Women.

PerseusHermes gave Perseus a sword &and Athena gave him a shield. They told him how to reach the nymphs of the North."Neither by ship nor yet by land shall one find the wondrous road to the gathering place of the Hyperboreans.“

PerseusBut Perseus had Hermes with him.Gifts: These were three: winged sandals, a magic wallet which would always become the right size for whatever was to be carried in it, and, most im-portant of all, a cap which made the wearer invisible.

PerseusOn his way home he found a Lovely maiden named Andromeda.Who is about to be sacrificed to aSeas serpent because of her mother Queen Cassiopeia.Perseus took off the head of the Serpent.Perseus asked for Andromeda’s

hand.

PerseusHe sailed back to the island ofHis mother only to find out that theWife of Dictys is dead and Dicts and His mother were hiding because ofDanae’s refusal. He also heard of the gathering Of the King and all the men who Favored him.

PerseusHe went to the palace and Stoned everyone with Medusa’s Head. When the islanders knew themselves freed from the tyrant it was easy for Perseus to find Danae and Dictys. He made Dictys king of the island, but he and his mother decided that they would go back with Andromeda to Greece and try to be reconciled to Acrisius

PerseusThey found out that Acrisius was driven away from the city. King of Larissa, in the North, was holding a great athletic contest, and he journeyed there to take part. In the discus- throwing when his turn came and he hurled the heavy missile, it swerved and fell among the spectators. Acrisius was there on a visit to the King, and the discus struck him. The blow was fatal and h e died at once.

PerseusSo Apollo's oracle was again proved true. If

Perseus felt any grief, at least he knew that his grandfather had done his best to kill him

and his mother. With his death their troubles came to an end. Perseus and Andromeda lived

happily ever after. Their son, Electryon, was the grandfather of Hercules. Medusa's head was

given to Athena, who bore it always upon the aegis, Zeus's shield, which she carried for

him.
