Periodic Table Trends: Atomic Radius & Ionization

Energypg. 307-312

LO: I can describe and explain the trend of atomic radius & ionization energy.

Element Families (Groups)

1: Alkali Metals2: Alkaline Earth Metals3: Boron Group4: Carbon Group5: Nitrogen Family6: Oxygen Family7: Halogens8: Noble Gases

Element Families (Groups)

Family number = # of valence electrons (v.e.)

1. Helps determine chemical behavior

2. Elements in same family behave similarly, chemically.

Homework Due: Inquiry into the PT

Atomic Radius

Atomic radius decreases as you move left to right across a period.

Atomic radius increases as you move down a family.

Negative Ion RadiusCl- vs. Cl

The Noble Gases

Noble Gases: Group 8Inert (non-reactive), stable elements due to full valence electron shells.

All elements want to “be like” the noble gases (stable).

Ionization Energy

Ionization Energy: The energy needed to remove an electron from an atom.

Leads to the formation of an ion (charged particle).

Ionization Energy Trend (I.E.)

I.E. increases as you move left to right across a period.

I.E. decreases as you move down a family.
