The world’s largest democracy is set to choose its next government, and maybe even a whole new evolutionary path. The choice seems to be between the centrist-left Congress-led coalition that has been in power for the past decade and the one led by the right-wing saffron-fronted alliance. The election, scheduled in April-May, is easily the most intense of the last 40 years and the run-up to it has already had several interesting twists. Businesses and multinational corporations are watching keenly. Dependent on the results of the election are the economic path India treads – whether decidedly capitalist or a middle path with a strong social focus – and the evolutionary path the economy follows. By June, we will have the answers. This primer is an attempt by MSLGROUP to help our audience – from clients to the industry – understand all that’s at stake in this election. It has been conceived as a one-glance ‘ready reckoner’ of sorts and is part of the ‘Voice of India 2014’ election insights initiative that we launched last year.
