GCSE YEAR 10

Factors affecting performance

Lesson Objectives.

• To understand how age can effect fitness and performance.

All – must all will be able to give examples of how age affects fitness and performance.

Most – should be able to explain the affects on fitness and performance

Some - might be able to describe and explain ways of reducing the effects of ageing.

Age. • On your whiteboard draw a graph with age

along the horizontal axis and fitness along the vertical.

• Now plot a line to show what you think happens to fitness levels from birth through to elderly years

AGE

Fitness

AGE.

On your white board use one of the three options to

provide an answer for what happens to each component

of fitness.

a) Increase

b) Decrease

c) Peak

• Health and skill related fitness components during your 20’s

• Movement during elderly years

• Heart rate during middle age

• Bone density during middle age

• Body Fat during middle age

Childhood – skills

develop through

regular practice

Using the headings sort the statements showing the reasons for performing in sport. Identify

appropriate sports for each category.

0-9, 9-15, 16 -35, 35+, 50+

1. Build health and fitness, socialising, fun and continued development of skills

2. Participate to building basic skills e.g. coordination

3. Participate in sports relying upon skill rather than strength, speed or power

4. Participate in compulsory PE (team games, contact sports), matches and extra curricula clubs to enhance skills and knowledge

5. Participate in low contact sports for fitness and fun

How can we reduce the effects of ageing?

• Good diet

• Regular light exercise can reduce the ageing process (especially when older to prevent injury)

• Socialising

• Yoga? Reduce joint stiffness and prevent muscle wastage

• Non weight bearing activities e.g. swimming, power walking

Can a person be fitter at 40 than at 20?

• Expect them not to be

• Bad lifestyle in twenties i.e. lack of exercise/unbalanced diet

• If in their 40`s someone started regular exercise, improved their fitness, and maintained a balanced diet potential, then there is the potential to be fitter.

Homework

• Complete the worksheet.

Gender

• To enhance knowledge of gender differences.

All – must be able to state the physical differences between each gender.

Most – could be able to describe and explain the differences

Some – might be able to explain the impact that gender can have on performance.
