Start Date Starting July 1, 2014, the MVC will begin to issue seven new license

plates for passenger carrying vehicles or PVT vehicles other than commercial buses, school buses and limousines. This will be done in a staggered rollout process which take twelve (12) month to complete.

• At the time of the registration renewal, each owner of a PVT vehicle will be required to change over to the new plates.

• All PVT vehicles being initially registered will be issued the new plates at a Motor Vehicle Agency.

• All PVT vehicles will be required to be plated with the new plates correctly by June 30, 2015.

PVT Vehicles

PVT Vehicles will be issued one of the following plates:– Ambulance– Hotel Bus– Jitney– Mobile Assistance Vehicle– Omnibus 2– Paratransit– Taxicab

PVT Vehicles

Definitions:

“Ambulances” mean any specially designed or modified landbased vehicle for treating and transporting sick and injured peopleby emergency medical services personnel.

“Mobility Assistance Vehicles” or “MAV” means specializedtransport vehicles that is validly licensed by the Department ofHealth and Senior Services and operated in accordance with thestandards set forth in N.J.A.C. 8:40.

PVT Vehicles

“Jitneys” are automobiles or motor buses with a carrying capacityof not more than 13 passengers operating in a single municipality orwith a carrying capacity of not more than 20 passengers operatingwithin four contiguous municipalities within any county along theAtlantic Ocean which route that does not parallel the same street ofa street railway or traction railway or any other bus route.

PVT Vehicles

“Hotel Buses” are used exclusively to transport clients to or fromtransportation hub such as an airport, train station or bus terminal.

“Taxicabs” are vehicles operated to transport a passenger for hirefrom one point to another which does not operate a regular route.

“Omnibus 2 Vehicles” are motor vehicles operated by a company or individual that provides passenger transportation to a target audience or market that is not in competition with a publicly regulated transit route or does not collect fares from the general public.

“Paratransit Vehicles" are motor vehicles which are used exclusively for the transportation of persons who are at least 60 years of age or who have disabilities or who are the clients of social service agencies, provided, that the motor vehicle is used in a service provided by a county either directly or by contract, or provided by a nonprofit organization, and the service is included by a county as part of its county plan, regardless of whether a fare is charged or donations are accepted.

PVT Vehicles

Plates• PVT Vehicles will be issued a license plate with the first (1st)

character as the letter “O” and second (2nd) character will be the first letter of the vehicle type and four (4) remaining characters will either be alpha or numeric.

• The exception to the rule is the Omnibus 2 Vehicles which begin with the letter O and number 2 along with the remaining four (4) alpha or numeric characters

Important Things to Know

• PVT Vehicles will be required to be inspected annually for emissions and safety at either a private inspection facility or inspection station.

• There are no change to insurance coverage.

• PVT Vehicles will be plated according to the service they provide.
