Transcript of Parts of a Cell

The following PowerPoint is presented in class for students to take notes. Class notes are the primary source students use to create their cell model.

Cell Membrane

A phospholipids layer that covers a cell’s surface and acts as a barrier between the inside of a cell and the cell’s environment.

Cell Wall

Cellulose fibers that surrounds the cell membrane of plants cells and provides strength and support to the cell.(Found in plants only)

Nucleolus Contains the cell’s DNA and serves as the control center of the cell.

DNA Deoxyribonucleic Acid is the heredity material that controls all the activities of the cell, contains the information to make new cells, and provides instructions for making proteins.

Nuclear Membrane

A phospholipids layer that surrounds the nucleolus and acts as a barrier between the nucleolus and the rest of the cell.

Large Vacuole

Stores water and other materials.(Founds in plant cells only.)

Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum

Delivers material inside the cell, packages proteins for release from the cell, and holds ribosome.

Ribosomes The site where amino acids are hooked together to make proteins, the building blocks of cells.

Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum

Makes lipids, breaks down drugs and other materials.

Golgi Complex

Processes and transports materials to the ER and out of the cell.

Cytoskeleton Protein scaffolding that supports the cell and provides a way for cell parts to travel.

Vesicles A membrane covered compartment that forms when part of the cell membrane surrounds an object and pinches off. Vesicles are the package that holds materials being transported into and out of the cell.

Lysosome A special type of vesicle that digests food particles, waste cell parts, and foreign invaders.(Only in Animals)

Mitochondria Where food molecules are burned with oxygen to release energy in the form of ATP.
