• This year your child is allowed to check out three library books.

• Each student checks out two books on their reading level and one on any level. Students receive their reading level from several assessments given. One assessment is the Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI), which gives the student a Lexile number.

• Each week your child has an assigned library day. Please encourage your child to have their books at school on their library day.

*Contact your teacher if further information is needed.

Library

Field Trip: • We will take two field trips a year. We love having

parent volunteers; However due to limited bus space we usually have a set number of parents that are able to attend the field trip with us. Due to these circumstances we have a volunteer drawing to choose parents that will chaperone. We will notify all parents that volunteered. More information will come home as the field trip dates draws closer.

• Starting this year all volunteers must go through an application process. Contact the office for more information.

Patriot Fit Club: • Third grade students have the opportunity to

participate in Patriot Fit Club. It is held in the gym every Monday after school. Call the office or Mr. Roller for more deatils.

Things to Remember

• Bring a water bottle and snack daily. It is recomended that water bottles have a ‘pop’ top.

• Homework will start after Labor Day.

• All snacks that are shared with other students must be from our district approved snack list.

Learning Targets/Topics

• Learning Targets will be posted on the classroom websites.

• ELA (Reading, Writing, Speaking, & Listening): identifying main idea, character traits, structure of literature, cursive handwriting, and writing in a variety of genres/text type.

• Math: place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, data, geometry, fractions, fact fluency, and problem solving.

Learning Targets/Topics

• Science: ecosystems, force and motion

• Social Studies: economy, government

• Word Work: spelling patterns, phonics, spelling assessments

Spelling/Word Work In third grade students will be using a spelling, and

vocabulary program called Words Their Way. The main benefit of Words Their Way is that it

differentiates instruction allowing each child to work at their appropriate instructional level.

Students were given a spelling inventory at the beginning of the year that helped their teacher place them at their instructional level.

Students will be tested weekly on their ability to spell high frequency words. Each student has an individualized list based on their spelling knowledge.

Reader’s Workshop • Students will meet with the teacher in small

reading groups.

• They will also complete various activities individually such as: journaling, book clubs, fluency practice, skill practice, reading to self, reading to partner.

• Students will be assessed on their reading level quarterly or as needed.

Math Workshop • Students will meet with the teacher in small

math groups.

• They will also complete various activities individually such as: fact fluency, journaling, daily math practice, computer based practice, solving problems, playing ‘hands on’ games

Goal Notebooks • Each student keeps track of their goals and

scores in their goal notebook.

• Students also house resources in the notebook.

• After assessments students will complete a reflection form. This form will help them understand what information/skill they need to practice.

• This practice will be incorporated in the workshops for ELA and Math.

Homework • Students will have a weekly packet with

homework and optional activities.

• Practice that is in the packet will vary throughout the year.

• All homework activities will be skills that have been previously taught in the classroom.

• Packets will be sent home Friday, and due the last day of the following school week.

• Your child does not have to bring a device.

• If they choose to bring their device they will use it at times designated by the teacher.

• Your student may not share a device with another student.

• Any Internet accessible device is acceptable, however, some will work better than others as a classroom tool.

Devices

Charging • The students should bring their device fully

charged each day. However, depending on battery life, the student will need to bring their own charger as one will not be provided.

• The teacher will have a long powerstrip available to use when needed.

Teacher Ease Online Gradebook Goal- Improve parent communication and support standards based grading practices.

Parents will be able to: log in using their SIS Parent Portal password and monitor

their own student’s progress. track their child’s progress by learning target throughout

the year.

How scores are figured and reported: Assignments/assessments are given to determine

mastery of a learning target and are scored using the 4,3,2,1 system.

The score is entered into the online grade book under the learning target.

The Path to a Score Reviewed: 1. Multiple assessments/assignments are used to

calculate a learning target score.

2. Learning target scores are then used to figure power standard scores.

3. Power standards report overall level of achievement on a key component of that subject.

Our goal is to provide communication between school and home regarding your child’s achievement. TeacherEase supports that goal by:

• providing greater access to your child’s current scores.

• accurately reflecting your child’s progression of mastery of their learning targets and power standards.

Expected Date for Parent Access: September 15, 2014 *Reminders and instructions to follow as needed.
