The pronouns me, te, nous, and vous are often used as objects of verbs.

Look at the following sentences:

Le chien me mord. Je t’invite à la fête.

In the sentence below the pronoun me is the direct object of the verb because it is receiving the action of the verb.

Le chien me mord.

In the sentence below t’ (te) is the direct object of the verb invite because it receives the action of the verb.

Je t’invite à la fête.

Il me téléphone tous les jours.

Notice that in French the direct object comes before the verb when it is a

pronoun.

The pronouns me, te, nous,

and vous always refer to

people.

Me and te

are singular pronouns.

Nous and vous are plural pronouns.

Sometimes the me, te, nous, and vous are used as objects of infinitives.

La prof voudrait vous enseigner le français.

The pronoun vous is the object of the infinitive enseigner.

In the sentence below, te is the object of the infinitive parler.

Elle ne veut pas te parler!

Notice that the object pronoun te is not inside the negative (ne…..pas) verb phrase. The pronoun te is outside the negation, next to the infinitive parler.

Elle ne veut pas te parler.

L’enfant ne voudrait pas vous regarder !Il ne veut pas me donner un

cadeau.

Madame Cook vous enseigne le français.Mes parents me donne de l’argent pour

le voyage.La prof nous presente le nouveau

sometimes used as indirect objects.
