• Pancake Tuesday

• Fat Day

2013 date February 12th

2014 date March 4th

• The word shrove is the past tense of the English verb shrive

• It gets its name because the day is before the start of Lent

Shrive: to obtain forgiveness for one's sins by way of Confession and self-punishment

• The day is commonly known as Pancake Day

• This is because it is tradition to eat pancakes

Pancake: A thin, flat cake of batter, usually fried in a pan.

• A religious tradition that lasts approximately six weeks, before Easter

• Many people give up certain luxuries for Lent e.g. chocolate

• Some people fast

Fast: normally people don’t eat animal products, to commemorate the fast observed by Christ during his temptation in the desert

• Pancakes use up eggs and milk (which people cannot eat whilst fasting)

• And they’re delicious!

• People race 415 yards (380 metres)

• They wear aprons and a scarf

• They have to toss the pancake at the start and finish

• It is also typical for children to have races at school
