Akhenaton and Amarna Period

Amenhotep IV, later known as Akhenaton, completely switched Egypt’s main god from Amen to Aton, the universal and only god. Switch from polytheism to mono.

Worship and cult of Amen and priesthood arose immediately after his demise.

Amarna Period known for relaxed rules for making art – extreme stylistic change in Egyptian Art!!

Akhenaton, temple of Aton, Karnak, Dynasty XVIII, 1353-1335

BCE, sandstone -> Androgynous figure, un-idealistic,

curvilinear contours

Thutmose, Nefertiti, Tell el-Armana, D. XVIII, 1353-1335 BCE, painted limestone

Similar expression as AkhenatonUnfinished, found in artists studio
