Who was Cesar Chavez?

• Born on March 31, 1927

• Died April 23,1993.

• Cesar Chavez was a Mexican American labor leader.

• Chavez was an activist for Latino farm workers.

• He was a leader who focused on terrible conditions endured by migrant farmers.

Cesar Chavez Childhood •  • His family lost their home and farm

due to the Great Depression.    • Cesar did not like school because

he was always moving around and was often discriminated against for speaking Spanish. 

• Cesar quit school after the eighth grade and started to work in the fields full time to help support his family.

• Founded by Cesar Chavez in 1962.

• It is a labor union that fights for farm workers rights to this day.

Why Chavez Began the United Farm

Workers movement?

Cesar Chavez noticed that farm workers were not being treated fairly by their employers. He formed the United Farm Workers movement and was seeking to:•Raise wages for the farm workers •Improve working conditions •Ensure legal protection for the poorest and most abused working people in America•Gain more rights for the farm workers•Organize opportunities for farm workers to continue their education

Cesar’s most notable Peaceful Protests

• March 1966, Cesar embarks upon a 264 mile pilgrimage from Delano to Sacramento to draw attention the suffering of farm workers.

• Cesar fasted for 36 days to draw attention to the suffering of farm workers.

Fasting

• Cesar fasted many times, in 1968 Cesar went on a water only, 25 day fast.

• He repeated the fast both in 1972 for 24 days; and in 1988 for 36 days.
